Ok I know non of you will know the exact time but can anyone here give a rough idea when the next lot of chips beyond the current ones be due out?
I ask because half life 2 and doom etc are due out in like april 2004.
I dont want to get a card for them only for the fX 6000 or new radon chips to come out like a few weeks later....
Has any one got a VAGUE idea how long we are talking???
Thanks!

Let me just re adjust my question.
When im asking for a time period im talkin roughly..
Are we expect in new cihps in the first half of next year or the late second?
How long was the ti4600 out before a new chip came out? i cant remember.
All im asking is would it be a good or bad idea to get a new card in april for half life 2? I really dont want to play half life with the card I have BUT I dont want see a new chip out one month later after I buy one.
I would like to be sure there would be no new chip till at least july.
What do you guys think? To buy or no to buy?

Sometime between January and April 2004.

At the risk of too many posts I would like to add a little more.
This is a very tough descision to make because lets say I get a card in april for HL2 ok?
Well that means I get to play the game in a good graphics mode like it was meant to be seen ok? But I bet if you ran HL2 on like 1900X1520 or whatever it is with Full AA and 8XAntriscop.filtering in a big out door area it isnt going to be FLAWLESS smooth ass frame rate.
I would so like like to run HL2 with EVERYTHING whacked up to 100% and for it to be smooths than a babys ass. You know so smooth it cant get any smoother.

So its a trade off.

So I could play the single player in medium res with the card I have now
(TI 4200) for a few weeks till I complete it then get the sick next card and spend like 6-9 months on multiplayer and addons at absolute best graphics posible.

OR

Play the single player in high res but then when the next chips come out I have to spend like a whole year not getting the babys ass thing on best settings. Its a tough call isnt it.
On the one had I have to play the single play on high res but on the other I will spend 10-20 times longer on multiplayer after I complete the single player.
Sorry to rattle on a bit but I dont wanna mess this up and im at a loss what to do.
Also non of us yet know how well the FX 5950 or radon 9800 will cope will everything on full on HL2 do we?
Mayby I should wait till march/april and see if theres any more news then decide huh?
Again sorry to go on about this but HL2 is going to be such a big step in gaming I have to make the right choice!

The number of threads on this subject is frightening at best...
NV40: February-March 2004
R420: March-April 2004

That's if you're willing to shell out $500+, minimum. If you want a $200 or $300 card, expect to have to wait 3-4 more months, at least. And it'll obviously be way slower than those $500 cards.

Seems your all wondering about what date the chips are gonna come out.
My bet is both companies must realise that if one of them doesnt get out their new chips out in late march and the other does then loads of half life 2 buyers will go to the compay to get it out first.
I bet we can almost 100% guarante that both will be out by april wouldnt you say? Thats assuming HL2 isnt delayed again!

You wont be able to do that for a number of years after Hl2's release.. i still cant run Ut2k3 in 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF and keep the min. fps over 30fps.. i desire a min of 60fps, but that would require lower res and some other stuff turned off... fortunately i can run it at 1280x960 with those settings and the min is around 40fps, thats fine enough for me..

So basically, dont expect to be able to play HL2 like you described until R500/NV50.

I disagree, I think an R420 or NV40 could run HL2 maxxed out at ~60fps, might take some overclocking though :afro2:

I disagree with you disagreeing :D 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF in HalfLife 2 not likely in my opinion , to good to be true :p

I don't see why the 4x FSAA isn't an option. Keep in mind HL2 is shading limited; MSAA doesn't cost you ANY shading performance.
1600x1200 8x AF with full Trilinear might be exagerated though...
