View Full Version : Doom3 question...
Ok, we've seen the first one, done the second one, and some wish for the third one.
My question is: Does it have a storyline at all?
From what I can remember the first and second ones were just about going aroung killing ugly things that popped out from everywhere.
Care to enlighten me?
meh..
I't had somewhat of a story, but not much at all really. It was all about running around blasting the demons of hell:)

A storyline is a must, I get bored quickly if there is not a interesting storyline to the game I'm playing.
All I ask for in Doom3 is amazing graphics, and some big guns:D

In The Mood For Blood
There are two distinctive ways of playing Doom 3, as compared to the predecessors where it's just "kill, kill and KILL!". For one, there's the High tempo mode of play where you'll most likely blast every single demons in sight and make it to your objective ASAP, or you can also take time to absorb the story, read the PDA, the emails, and dive into the back story - something that was lacking in the first two Dooms. To make the game immersive, the creators set out to make a story (they hired a professional writer to spice up the material), and so in essence, there is a powerful theme to the game that the player should attempt to appreciate. Also, the game itself is a compliment to the artists. Players are encouraged to play at a moderate pace, to “stop and smell the roses” or body parts for the matter, and appreciate the level of details and depth that went into creating the world of Doom 3.
The demons were purposely made tough to fight, and there are also different puzzles written in, in the hope that the player will be made to think of how to approach situations differently rather than blasting their way through. So unlike the previous Doom games, Doom 3 does have a certain element of being a "thinking man's" game rather than a senseless shoot-to-kill one.

Well id had a story in quake 2, but they don't really shove it down your throat. When I played the first time I never even noticed a story, and it was not until I replayed it at a later time that I realized things actually made some sort of sense, and were related to eachother.
I don't really go in arguments over story or gameplay b/c it is a personal opinion, I wasn't one of the people that though Halflife was amazingly new in gameplay featured, b/c to me finding a switch to turn on the "oxygen" and the "fuel" is the same as finding a red skull key. I don't care much, but I will admit that it is better to have a plausible thing to find at least as opposed to a random object.
In any case d3 will have an attempt at a story and we will all decide whether we like it or not.

Will there actually be an in-depth storyline or just a regular "storyline" that we usually get from id software?
Believe it or not, there will actually be an in-depth story line. Id has hired writer Matt Castelo to come up with an intriguing and suspenseful storyline to go along with the terrifying gameplay. His previous works include writing for such games as the 7th Guest and The 11th Hour.

If it doesn't take every single bullet, cell, rocket, and grenade I have to kill the Cyberdemon, I'll be disappointed.

Searous Sam 1 and 2 had great stories and alot of killing. Maybe doom 3 will be similer. :)
Quake 2 had a decent story though it was maily kill the baddies and get more ammo.

I thought Quake 2 was actually very well connected. The story was REALLY simple but just as deep most action flicks. I actually felt a great sense of accomplishment when I finally escaped from Stroggos at the end.
Man that game was impressive at the time.

What is Serious Sam's story??
story of survival my friend... kill the big/bad mofo's before they kill you...
and once you finish killing them... bash their faces in with the butts of your gun...

While I think DooM 3 will have something of a story, it's not going to be a running kill-fest like Serious Sam. Enemies are going to be placed strategically and in just the right quantity. I think JC and crew are going for atmosphere and a game that will scare the crap out of you. For that, I can't wait. :D

mods in the doom3 can be as fast as the original Doom1 or SeriouSam with dozens of monters at the same time.. it just that current generation hardware will not be able to handle that.. So idsoftware its targeting the majority wich will have Geforce4/RAdeon9600/Fx5700 but by the end of 2004 and 2005 expect more and more speed and killer fests mods ,with the speed of those old games ..bigger Outdoors levels will gradually increase with faster hardware too,the slow pace its a design decision not a limitation ..multiplayer limited to 4 players ,only in the retail game ,but mods will be able to increase that number the way they like, quake4 will be done too in that engine ,just figure that . the biggest fragfest i have ever seen in a game was in quake2 with 64 players at the same time.. (there were some servers of tribes2 too with 120players :)) but in quake2 was more noticeable when a server was crowded because of its smaller enviroments. in doom3 you will be able to overcrowd any level with the included editor with as many monsters you want ,but dont expect too be playable at all with current hardware. it just a matter of time ,for the speed of the hardware to be there.

Q2 had a semblance of a story. Before the game came out iD was crowing about how Q2 wouldn't be like Q1 and the AI and story would be there, the levels would make sense, etc. We all know the AI sucked and the story was weak at best.
With less monsters to frag, Doom3 will need a story. At least earlier games could get away without having a story by continually throwing enemies at you.

Half-Life's tasks were interesting because you never knew what would happen. All those scripted events were brilliant. The levels actually made sense and it didn't seem like they were designed and the story was thought up ad hoc.
In any case d3 will have an attempt at a story and we will all decide whether we like it or not.
Once it finally comes out
If the game is pretty enough I can probably forgive a lack of story, assuming that's the case. What I really can't stand are ugly games that have no story; no sense of why I should be playing.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOOM!!!!!!!!!:D :D :D

Ah yes, the AI in Quake 2: "THEY CAN DUCK!" Yes, although they stop moving beforehand to duck, do so in the open, and generally just serve as a nice way to kill a few other more annoying enemies.
