Hello

I am upgrading my graphics card from my old Radeon 8500 but am unsure about which of the 2 cards would be more future proof. The Geforce FX 5900XT or the Radeon 9600XT for games such as, Half life, Doom 3, Far cry. Stalker, And others. Any help would be appreciated

Read the reviews at firingsquad or tech report. the 5900XT outperforms the 9600XT with AA and AF and also with higher resolutions

Future games? U waited this long...wait a few more...best get next gen hardware for next gen games ;)

I would get a 9800 Non Pro for the same price ($199).

5900XT > 9600XT

5900 has 256bit memory bus so it performs better than R9600XT overall, but if you want the MOST future proof card I'd recommend an R9800non-pro. It's a little more money than the 5900XT, but the picture quality is a lot better and it has 8 pipelines which no Nvidia cards currently have

Can't find a 9800 non pro for $199, more like $260 :(

On a positive note, NewEgg is selling a 9800 Pro Bulk for $288 :) Its out of my $200 dollar price range, so I am getting 5900 NP. Still, its about time Radeon 9800 Pro prices started coming down IMO :)

The 5900XT is clearly better, which annoys me - the day the PC shop confirms my 9600XT order, I discover that the 5900XT exists, and it's gonna be substanitally better.

Ah well. I've learnt my lesson. Always look to see if a graphics manufacturer is about to release something within the next couple of weeks before making any decisions.
