This will be my first venture into a 4x2 pipeline world of nvidia so I thought I'd buy the first 0.13 micron DDR2 part ever produced.
True, you can get quicker for less ( and I can afford the whole range so no point carping on about the 5900 non ultra ) but this is history in the making, the next ( slightly wobbly as it turned out ) step .
It's even green and has the nvidia recommened heatsink.
Lets say the Rolls Royce Phantom of the graphics world. Another glass of champers vicar, while we roll along ?
I have a warm sort of historical glow enveloping me, and it is even the rosier for the thought that Hellbinder has to accept that nvidia is still making money out of these cards 12 months later ..chuckle ..

you history freak
so let me get this straight, you could have bought the far more powerful and far quieter FX5900SE for $189... but you decided to be nostalgic and bought the loud, overpriced, overheating, underpowered FX5800U instead for $350us ?!
Ummm... wanna buy some belly button lint? Only $49.99 Freshly picked! :D

I was gonna say, it ain't quite like the V5 6000 for collectability or nothing....it's still pretty much the butt of jokes.

Exactly. A video card is a toy, even though only about 100,000 5800Us were produced (at least that's the figure I keep hearing) it's definitely not going to appreciate in value. This card will be fun to play with for about a week, but I guarantee you'll get tired of the dustbuster real fast. I know I did.
Wow. Youre a braver man than I.
I agrree that if you have the money, forget the SE. But why not a 5900 Ultra? Or, if you like the dustbuster cooler, even a 5950?
I owned a 5800 Ultra, one of the first in the UK to get one. Had it on order for about a month and a half and it lasted about two weeks where I sent it back due to the racket it made. Horrible loud, unstable, crashing, hot card. Im very pleased with my 5900 Ultra. Oh then the buggers brought out the 5950 Ultra not long after that grrrrrr *turning red just thinking about it*.
Dude Cancel that order quick!!! :D And for that money u will be able to get maybe a 5900 regular? maybe even a 5900Ultra!!

Actually, I thought Zakelwe was going to buy the 5800U just to annoy Hellbinder. Pretty good deal for $350.
sorry folks... but IMO with FW 52.16 or 53.03, and an aftermarket cooling solution, the 5800 U or NU is a great card...
... no, a 5700U cannot touch it... check the ORB, or Aquamark results...
PIMPIN for a 128bit card...
...IMO... remember that when you're whipping me for givin props to this much maligned piece o pcb... :p ;)

I'd like one too, but I'm not willing to pay $350 bucks :( If you could get one for around half that or less it would be great card to have in your collection
Enjoy your new video card :)

I can take jokes from my friends, but I don't count you as one of them so I just see it as a direct insult that was totally uncalled for. :(

They already made their money off them (what little they did)--they're certainly not making any more currently. It's the OEM's themselves praying to find silly people to foist the rest of their stock for over-priced, under-desired tech that you're making happy. ;)
but when these are floating around soon for $150 or so they'll be highly sought after... but only for a little while cuz there's not that many of em...
spring's mainstream lineup will have 5800-ish performance... so some folks may get lucky and score a pretty decent midrange card around that time...
tell me that amount is CAD.

You ought to work harder my good man :D
It's a UK price and yes we do get ripped off.
Actually I am surprised the comments are less vocal then they were, I was trying for shock and awe value :)
I tend to buy a lot of video cards as I like benching them, money is no object, so I buy em, rip the heatsink off and then it's now volt mod time and Pelt and chilled water cooling. Hence my 5700U is in bits and cannot play games on . I'm still using my trusty MSI/Creative 4800SE for games but I now want to volt mod that. So I needed a replacement card for this to play games on. 4x2 at 400+ is better than 4x2 at 340. Memory is still 128 bit but goes from 685 to 800+. Nice percentage gains.
Now if I got my card of choice, a Gainward Golden Sample 5900 non ultra I know that within 2 weeks it'd be in pieces also, so when I saw the 5800 advertised ( the 5800 does not have the dustbuster ..read your history books :) ) I thought this is the card for me for games until nv40 / r420.
No temptation to rip it apart and I bet, as ragejg says, it works well now with 53.03 drivers for SOF2, C&C etc.
It'll never be worth any money but it will do me until Doom 3 / HL2 and then I'll keep it to one side in case the next card goes pop.
Regards
Andy
