can anybody advise if it is possible to convert a DOS based programme into a text format so i can then transfer it onto floppy disk .Is this what is known as an Asicii file?,which is a speacilised word programming programme. I purchased the software about 6 yrs ago to create documents for use in my business. The documents are descriptions and quantities of building works used for costing and estimating purposes. It would be useful therefore to be able to create an excel file.
At the moment i can only produce a hard copy of the documents in text.I can fax or e-mail a typical page from a document or supply a floppy disc in DOS format.Hope someone can help

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking.

Is it the program you want or the data files created by the program?

The program itself can just be copied to floppy (or CD if it's too big for a floppy) by dragging the folder that contains it to the floppy drive. No conversion is necessary.

If it's the data files, then since they are already in ASCI format you can probably just import them into Excel as is.

Can you provide some more clarification? Thanks.

i will try to explain in a bit more detail for anyone out there who can help me, the files i am trying to open are a dos based program and windows says it cannot open them and says it needs to know the program that created it .The files are named in windows as DBF files if that is any help to anyone. Unfortunately the firm that wrote this software for me has now gone into liquidation and can no longer help me so i welcome anyones input .

.DBF files should be dBase format. If they are then you should be able to import them into Excel using Excel's import function. For example, in Excel XP (2002), it's Data-->Import External Data. Then you just navigate to the folder containing the file or files, select them, and click OK.

Yeah, it should work with Excel 2000 as well. My example for Excel XP was just that, an example. Check Excel 2000's help file by typing "import" into the Index tab and it should provide the details.
