View Full Version : DSL question

Ive had 56k for years, and have been hindered, by not being able to play good games online. Sure, Ive played halo, and UT2003 online, but then again, those aren't dedicated games, like everquest.
Speaking of Everquest 2, I would like to get into this game, when it comes out, or maybe Lineage 2. Cant do this with 56k.er.
Anyways, to the question:
Assuming, when they do the test, to see if I can get DSL out here;
How is the online gaming with the setup?
They quoted me 768k downstream, and 128k up.

Those are pretty standard low-end DSL rates but bandwidth alone doesn't determine ping times. A friend of mine has a cheap cable service that is something like 144k down and 80k up and its still much much better than dial up. Three of us once went through a router on his cable and played on a BF1942 server with 29 other players and we were all still pinging at around 40-50ms.
Almost everyone who switches from dialup to any form of broadband enjoys a much improved gaming experience.
BTW, expect MMORPGs to still be a bit laggy since they are usually programmed by incompetant fools (Starwars Galaxies).

I just got the call, if I can get dsl, and the answer was no.
I think it was something to do with the lines we have around here.
He said though, in 30 days, the lines might be upgraded or something.
This sux. :(

Sorry to hear that man.
They ALWAYS say the lines might be upgraded soon. Never believe that. Have you looked into getting broadband through your cable company?

I know how you feel. I waited over a year for broadband to be available in my area while the other side of town already had it. All you can do is keep calling them.
Look up cable and wireless in your area. Altho wireless tends to be on the worse end of broadband, it is still much better than dial-up.

In 2001 they upgraded the entire city from regular lines to fiber optic. Since then, my speeds have gone up from 3mbps to 4.5mbps with a 512kbps upstream. Before we were limited to 128kbps, but now we can get 512, so I figured what the hell.

Not always.. apparently if they dont replace the phone lines around my area in 2 years, anyone who uses them can sue them because they are crappy/old and dangerous.
I can still get ADSL though.. and enjoy decent speeds for 512k
Tough luck not being able to get it, my friend had the same problem and had to get ISDN..

I cant even get cable out here, Im 'just' out of range(by about .5 miles  )
Same deal with DSL, Im 'just' out of range, as far as I know.
Sat. internet isn't good for gaming, and this is my primary reason for it.

sorry to hear bout it, but for gameing you need latency, bandwith usually isnt an issue, dsl and cable offer more than plenty of bandwith for online gmaes, but they also offer GREAT latency what is the key point.
also,

I used to have AOL DSL it suck major ars , for games my ping best case scenario were 250 :o usually 300~ , only good thing was download speed was realy fast and stable.
Offcourse i had even forse with Dial up 400+
Got Cable now and pings are from as low as 10ms to average 60+ :D

Well, maybe new technology will allow DSL to work further than 18000 feet from the switch.
Maybe my area will upgrade to this decades technology.
...And maybe Ice cream will fall from the sky! :nana:

In my experience, DSL is usually preferred for latency, since you don't share as much of your pipe with others. Cable systems are normally better for overall bandwidth, but everyone shares starting at your local neighborhood, while with DSL it usually starts at the CO, and that's also normally got a higher available bandwidth available from it on upstream than from the house to the CO. (Bad experiences with game playing and cable, much better with DSL. Better experiences with cable and downloading large files, due to 3-4x the available bandwidth / speed).

so your saying dsl would be the best bet vs cable?

It's not an absolute answer for that question. Cable companies have recently spent a lot of money widening the pipes in the areas they serve, and also have capped many of their users so that they can't max out the available bandwidth all by themselves. These two things make it possible for many cable users to not really get hurt by latency (which really spikes when the amount of data being transferred exceed the available bandwidth).
Likewise, some DSL companies are starting to offer much higher bandwidth connections to their users.
I'd say the best thing is to talk to others in your area to see what their experiences have been and are now. It'd be best if you can find people with each type of connection too, to get the complete picture.

Odd news. The cable company called me, and said now I can get cable internet where I am. I asked them why the 'local' place said I couldn't, and they said that I could, because my address is in their database.
I think Ill get the verdict tomorrow from the local shop.
Well, if it's true, then Ill have to pay a little more because I dont have cable, but Direct TV.
They said the cost is $57.00 a month, no install fees, no contracts, plus $3.00 for modem lease.
I dont know how good it will be out here, if I can get it at all, so I decided to lease the modem, to see whats going on.
The quoted downstream said 3Megs so I dont know.
Any comments?

I take direct tv over cable tv anyday. :)
BTW, can you tell me anything about cable internet?

Oh man, is it great!
Everything is just so much more fun on cable, eg web browsing, chatting, playing video games etc.
But if ya dont use the internet much than it may not be for you,
also one thing i allways forget about is its 'allways on'

Is their any programs that will allow you to disconnect from the net, for protection?

Robert well just run a firewall, or get a nat firewall (router) or you can unplug your cord from your NIC, or you can disable your NIC via control pannel.

What all do I need to run a cable modem, besides the modem?
My board has LAN capability.
Also, is it possible to set the modem on top of my pc, so when I want to disconnect, just pull the plug? And doing this a lot, does it cause bad wear?
