I purchased the nvidia nforce 2 chipset based K7N2G. I installed windows 98 on to it, the later I upgraded it to windows xp. To make sure I reinstalled all system drivers and video drivers from the nvidia nforce cd.
When ever i watch music videos or play any games like quake, half life. the screen glitches, it will work for 5 secs then pause for a half a sec then go then stop and so on. I updated the system drivers and also updated the video driver. What could this be? Please help!

Was it a clean install of XP or did you install on top of 98? If you did an install-on-top of that's your problem. You should never do an "upgrade" install.

why not? If i want to keep all of my files then i would have to upgrade? I have so much stuff. it would take a million years to reinstall everything!

Incompatible cores. Windows 98 is built on Windows 95 technology. XP is built on the far more stable NT/2000 core. As a result hardware requires completely different drivers. Why do you think for your most important hardware (mainboard chipset, sound, video) there is one set for Windows 9x and one for 2000/XP?

If you only have one hard drive, get a program like Partition Magic and create a second partition on which to backup all your important data/files. Move all the stuff you want to back up there, then format the partition with the operating system on it and install XP cleanly with the NTFS file system (it can read FAT32 but FAT32 cannot read NTFS) on the C: partition thus not harming any of the info you put on the backup. And just to be triply sure you have no issues with losing information, bust out your CD burner and put it onto disc. There's no substitute for having hard copies of data, believe me.

Anyone on this board will tell you that it's completely unadvisable to install any Windows operating system over a previous version, especially when going from the 9x core to and NT-based one. You set yourself up for nothing but problems.
