nVidia tends to expose features of their hardware through OpenGL before they do so through D3D, and speed optimizations usually show up in OGL before showing up in D3D also.
They simply have the advatange that more Developers started programing in OpenGL on their cards using their proprietary OpenGL Extensions. Its not an issue of the driver being "better" than the D3D one. You *can* specifcally optomize OpenGL for a specific hardware and you *Can't* do that in D3D.

Eventually that trend will even out and ATi will make up some ground with developers.

Yes, that's likely. But I hardly see how them having Doom 3 optimizations makes it impossible for NVIDIA to have *more* of them? No matter what's the reality here, NVIDIA sincerly believes it will beat ATI in it. So if they don't, yes, they're pretty much toast in everything else too. Once again, that's one thing that would surprise me however.

That was just the proof to me things weren't get any better, let alone change; don't think it was a sudden decision with me loving the site a few days ago. Still, considering the market it targets, nV News does its job well, but I'm not part of that market anymore, and I really don't feel like losing my time here thus.

Well, seeing as NV40 will (presumably) use the multi-precision NV30 path or something similar, I would expect it to be a little faster than R420 in D3. Of course, the full-precision R420 would have better image quality...

Indeed, I definitely realize that. I do read your posts at other places :D

Agreed, nV News is an excellent NVIDIA fansite.

I have to admit it's been crossing my mind not coming to NVN either, not with the recent events.

There seems to be a lot of conjecture, ass-u-me 'ing and gesturing from people that have (at best) half of a story to go by. Sometimes it can get to be like a good old fashion hen party around here.

These ultimatums of "ooh boy, I just might sorta kinda maybe possibly leave, take my ball and never come back" are so tired and juvenile. So go already, nobody is twisting your arm to stay and vainly second guess.

Sorry, I usually don't bother to dignify lame posts with a response but I've had a crappy week and I'm not in the most tolerant of moods. Nothing personal towards anyone but I've gotta vent.

Absolutely, people want to leave then do it already. Stick to the thread's original flow. Ie discussing nv40.

Anandtech now says R420 will be 8 pipelines and I assume 8x1, nv430 is going to be probably 6x2 or 8x2 or 18 other possibilities ( is it really that flexible ? ) but as someone who is ignorant of architecture does this mean that nv40 is likely to be faster in present and older games whilst it will be a battle of the pixel and vertex units for the new games, and the general feeling here is that r420 has the edge ?

Regards

Andy

From my POV, NVN has been getting worse for months; the best part remains the news, which is pretty much a one-man job by MUYA, and who's doing a great job at that :) But I've never personally been very interested by general hardware news/all the reviews in the globe (sometimes I am, but it's just I'd have no free time if I had to read all that hehe ;))

Reviews and News are just getting worse IMO. The forums particularly; they seem much less intelligent than before, and much more "extremist"; way less moderate people here than before. But then again, that's just an impression, and for some people they might see the exact opposite. Eh.

Sure, there you go. Just to make sure I don't post again by error, I'll just replace my password by complete rubbish and my e-mail to something obviously wrong so I can't fetch the password.

Whatever ATI does at the hardware side they have a big issue with what they have at the driver side of OpenGL. Almost certainly it is being addressed, but it takes time.

The problem isn't so much with the reviews that are posted, but with the reviews that aren't posted...

This, folks, is what's known as a thread derail.

Thank-you for pointing this out earlier in this thread.

To those of you who are unsatisfied with NVNEWS you are free to leave.
I run this website to the best of my ablitity and hold all my reviewers to the same standards. I'm not a babysitter. If I ask a reviewer if he can he review in specified time and up to our quality of reviews and he says "yes" I expect it to be done. I'm not expecting to get replies such as:

"Ever since I sent you that POS review, I expected this. yes, it was total crap. I apologize. there has been serious **** for me in the past two weeks..."

I had talked to this reviewer several times during the two week period and never did he mention he was having serious **** problems. It was only after I got the review and saw the quality that I called him on his work. The fact is and the reviewer knew this going into the review that I had family problems of my own is why he was asked to do the review. I spent my own money helping him upgrade his computer and so he could do reviews for my site. I was depending on him to help me like I have helped him. Look where its gotten me, its my own fault. I should learn to be a bettter judge of character and realize who is here to a job and who are to immature to accept responsibility. So with that I shall close this thread because its gotten way off topic with my enemies trying to discredit me for giving a kid a chance.

OK sorry to barge in on the closed thread Mike, but.

You people have no idea what goes on at this site, Mike works his arse off here to keep this place running to a very high standard and all people can do is complain. Uttar feel free to leave if non biased reporting and discussion makes you feel uncomfortable, the staff members here work to keep these forums friendly to all and to give support to anyone, how is the site changing, we have heard all this before and no doubt we will hear it again at some point. People use to complain when we didn't cover ATI reviews, now they have found something else to complain about. I guess it's hard to please some folk around here, now not to sound too rude but I suggest people take their "inside" knowledge of this site and flush it down the toilet because thats where the rumours belong.
