Over a year ago now I was waiting to buy the 5800U and getting very excited about the new nv30 and it's juicy sounding DDR2 and 0.13micron tech, of course the rest is history, but in comparison the hardware rumour mill is very quiet here this time. Is it because of what happened last time or are people just happy with their nv/31/44/35/36/38's ?
I have to say I am fairly excited about it, I'm glad there is no hype this time, but I was rather concerned that Doom 3 would be too much for it, coupled with lack of cpu power to do all the AI etc justice. However AMD64 has aleviated my cpu fears and it looks like Mr Carmack has managed to get reasonable performance out of current cards, so mv40 is looking good.
Or is the reason it's quiet because everyone is going r420 ( I have not kept up with the r420 rumours but assume it is faster ) ?
Did Uttar or others say that the nv40 IQ, AA in particular, will be improved, or is this very much still unknown ?
Thoughts welcome
Regards
Andy

If you search these and other forums you will see plenty of topics on R420 and NV40 rumours.
Unfortunately nobody knows anything or nobody who knows is talking!
Edit: Spelling mistake:D

From all the rumors it looks like people already overhyped both NV40 and R420 , none of them will be very big jump :(
tid bits from UTTAR and MUFU are littered around this section.
Lets see for nv40, insane memory bandwidth 44GB/sec (from 800MHzmhz which is 1.6ghz effective) using 256 bit memory interface. 170-180 million trannies in what Saturn quoted BFG's (I think) John Malloy as saying, NV40 is new from ground up? new AA stuff, Mufu said maybe 550+ core launch speed. PS processing vastly improved with a pipeline that acts like a 8X1? 8X2 configurations for all ops?
ATI...i think John Reynolds said in another thread, he speculates r420 (through his sources) to be 8X2, twice the VS power? Twice the PS power of the present R3XX? New AA as well? 160-170 million trannies?
One thing for sure, both cards are gonna kick some serious DX9 butt!
Bring on March now!!!

...and probably suck some serious watts too.

What? No.
It's going to represent the same kind of jumps seen in previous generation -> generation jumps. Quake 3 isn't going to treble in speed, but certainly things which aren't CPU limited are going to get a nice boost. This is no 10% jump affair ;)
EDIT: Here, have some NV40 numbers (Athlon 64 FX51, 1GB DDR400):
UT2003 1600x1200 = 190fps
UT2003 1600x1200 4xAA/8xAF = 100fps
Halo 1600x1200 = 50fps
HL2 1024x768 = 95fps
Not entirely sure on the reliability of those, but the only one I have major reservations about is HL2, since I'm not sure of what path that was using - could still be mixed mode. The rest show about the performance increases I expected, but i'm not sure about the maps/benchmarks used in any of that.
Again, don't take these for gospel and don't ask where they came from - Just take it as something to think about for now, until something more concrete turns up. Things heard on "the grapevine" are notorious for turning out to be inaccurate, no matter how correct they look at first.
paul are you gonna become the next uttar ...please say it so

and do you know what form of aa that was applied there

NV40 just taped out? (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=13598)
Say it aint so. Gonna be a while till we get to play with then.
Interesting benches there Paul, but if the inq is actually right about the tape out well..
I'm more interested in R420 atm though. I wonder what ATI can come up with in such short period of time. If i understand it correctly R420 is a fairly new VPU so to speak and hasn't been in development that long?
More like a R3xx with a touch of R400? I dunno, maybe thats just something i dreamt
i think the tapeout that the inq is refering to is the final step that will ship with the first boards "a03" if im not mistaken .....

Yeah. I dropped by B3D and the "pros" over there said this (http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9813) :D
That place is like a bible, you can always find the truth there..or something a little less dramatic :p

the thing is, with the new chips, there isnt going to be a huge jump in performance. i am satisfied with my games, but i, as a customer, want something that will NOT loose 90 fps when aa is used. AA is a great idea, but the implmentation is terrible. and remember, the nv3x was gonna be SUPER-ULTRA-MEGA-CRAZY fast... and all you geforce4 owners.. rejoice.. you still have competitive cards.

yeah,, its the inquiror heh i saw that too, they could just be 'guessing'....

About 75% of my customers have indicated a preference towards ATi nextgen. All I can say is wait till I get some comparison systems setup:|

and who are your customers ???

NV30/NV35 is a lot faster than NV25...with FSAA and AF applied, of course.

i agree stealth, with aa and af applied, it is much improved, but i am one of those gamers that wants max performance. i dont stop much to check out the jaggies or the pretty filtering... but to those that use those, lets hope the nv40's wont have such a performance hit when AA and AF are used. thats the sole reason i dont use them now. my 5700 is fast but not enough with AA and AF.
also, i will never stray from nvidia. i am a hardcore fan.

According to MuFu, A0 samples are running at 300 core/800 mem. Link. (http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=211841#211841) Hopefully the core on A1 samples will be significantly higher (like 250 MHz :D )

i hope so also. nvidia has always been about raw horsepower.
///off topic///zoomy, FYI, the "624" number in your sig for your 5700 is in fact the effective speed of the ram... so it really runs @ 312. 624 is a nice figure though for a 5700. Just thought I'd let you know... :) ///back on topic///

Well supposedly, A1 is back and it isn't much of a speed hike at all. A2 should be though and that's the stepping they want to use for launch.
550MHz sounds unlikely now, huh? Maybe with a dustbuster. :-\
MuFu.

to me, the clock speed isnt nearly as important as how efficiant the GPU is. it can clock at 100 mhz, as long as it proccesses the information quickly.

Heh that doesn't look for Nvidia , unless NV40 does realy ALOT of instructions per cloak like R300 vs NV30 , but how high will be R420 cloaked ? it supposed to be even more effician then R300 plus made on .13 process :drooling:
