I tried it yesterday (ripped the new Disturbed and Red Hot Chili Peppers CDs to try it out), and boy oh boy, it's fantastic.

Using a quality level of 6 (it's all VBR so the stated bitrate doesn't count for much), it sounds fantastic. Better than any MP3 I have from either CD, including the 320kbps ones.

And get this--the average bitrate for each of the CDs is around 180Kbps, and it STILL sounds at least as good as 320kbps.

And it was ripped with CDex, btw. :D

I love ogg - sounds fantastic..Just takes up alot of space and winamp seems to eat up more resources with OGG..I dont use VBR.

I usually use LAME and rip at 320 unless its an Album that I truly love and want nothing but crystal pure sound..OGG is fantastic.

on a different note SSC, what do you think of the new Disturbed album? I love it, kickass album and the Prayer video is rather damn good:cool:

Ogg, wma, mp3, blah. I use 'em to sample only. I buy all the discs I download and enjoy. I don't care about their compression scheme. final product is what matters.

yes ...we know...you've mentioned that you prefer cds on many threads concerning digital audio compression...

:p

I prefer cds myself, but the lack of a kickass sound system means I end up playing them on my PC. So I might as well encode them to save me some time:cool:

Meh, Disturbed was never really my thing... there are some really fantastic songs (Liberate, Prayer, Believe, for example), and the rest are kinda meh.

Need to get the new Korn CD to compare...

I wuv ogg!!!

If mp3 ever get taken over i can easily switch to ogg format. I picked up a rpm from freshmeat which converts mp3 to ogg at a really freakin fast rate.

The best way to go about it is to convert wav tracks on ur cd to ogg, boy the quality is amazing.

OK... got new Korn today.

Ripped at quality 7.

HOLY CRAP IT'S FAN-FRIGGIN-TASTIC

And yes, I'm referring to new Korn (it's channelling NIN... I can't complain, NIN still kicks the crap out of it though) and Ogg.

Wow.

I'm diggin' it.

Yes.

It beats everything else to a bloody pulp.

I love NIN

AS for Ogg, how is it compared to:

"lame.exe -r3mix"

hmm?

mp3 encoded with LAME MP3 encoder and presets -remix

"-alt standard" has better quality and file size is only a little higher

meh, ogg is open-source and is in UT2k3, so yes, it MOST CERTAINLY DOES (even if it doesn't) ;)

LAME encoded MP3s are really polished quality-wise, but Ogg might be able to beat them. Ogg is a better compression scheme overall anyway though, so that wouldn't surprise me. however, MP3s are by far more ubiquitous, and that's why they get the nod.

I'm talking about rips--I don't need to share them, I just want to listen to them...
