Halo in many's opinion is a badly coded port, destined to run poopy on even the most modern PC's...

Many ppl here will now go on to jeer the game and the team behind it, and M$...

I think slightly different about the whole situation, but I've typed my rhetoric on it enough times already since november...

... supposedly a patch will be released soon to further improve the performance of this game on many ppl's systems...

Thank man,

is this somethink to do with the game and not my vid card which i understand performs poorly on dx9 games.

your card does not run poorly in dx9 games, it just doesn't perform DX9 shader operations quite as fast as ATI's R3XX series... by no means is nv35/38 a complete slouch in DX9...

so yes, it is something to do with the game.

///BTW: from what I've heard Halo will run a LITTLE better on an R3XX card than an nv38... I haven't been scrutinizing review specs in a while so I'm not THE authority on that specific issue, but I do think my statement was fairly correct.///

i have a ati 9800pro 128, and it performs as u said slightly better but im talking a couple of fps and thats all. still noware really playable.
i used to be an ati fan, but i decided to try an 5950u 256meg and its supperb, the 9800 pro sits on the side, must sell it as i dont use it anymore.

sticky...........:)

Best way to improve frame rate in Halo is to drop the resolution to 1024x768 and turn off specular within the game. I think leaving specular off makes the game look better (less shiny) plus the frame rate increase is about 20 percent.

heh, with Halo, it's almost always a matter of opinion, as some people can't stand it's performance and some can. I found the game smooth enough on a GF3 equipped XP1700 @ 1.83ghz with control panel set to the middle, mipmaps kicked one notch down, in game options kicked a notch down, even with specular on @ 800x600 (vsync off setting)... To me it still looked as good as the xbox version and played great. I've never turned specular off on a gf3, but I'm sure that it would definitely free up even more frames...

Those with HQ 19" and 21" monitors I understand, however. They see 10x7 as too pixelly, so its a disappointment to have to run @ that rez, or even worse, 800x600.

I have grade B monitors, a 17" and a 15" secondary... and maybe I'm actin like a geezer, but I'm not really that bothered if I gotta kick down to 800x600...

//I is god awful thankful to have my 5900, however :p//

things to try:

disable AA,AF if enabled , lowering resolution ,disable vsync etc etc

start halo with "halo.exe -use11" this forces ps1.1 and should give you better performance

already mentioned disable specular that should boost FPS quite a bit

I Have a 9800 pro and that sucks just as much as the nvidia when i run halo not any faster at all over the nvidia card. i have also just put in a P4 3.2 EE cpu and that dosent help a great deal. This low frame rate with both cards seems to be the norm from this game unless ur prepared to sacrifice resolution and eyecandy, but just thought I'ed share my experience's with you all from a user who has both ati and nvidia cards and is'nt gullable enough to think ati is better than nvidia or vis versa when it comes to high end vid cards.

PS. the nvidia card is the card i use of choice, but thats personal choice, the 9800 pro is'nt any faster or slower i just perfer the iq of the nvidia card.

Just an update on this...

The good news is that it's done on our side and more testing here is showing that some configurations are actually exceeding 60% performance increases. We believe that the Fast Shaders Engine is what we've been looking for. Shawn Green did most of the work on it and everyone at Gearbox is super impressed with what he's done.

The bad news is that we're not sure we can get the testing resources committed up in Redmond so that it can be released with the HEK update. I'm still working on the idea of a beta update - I think a beta update would a great way to get the Fast Shaders Engine tested on lots of configurations which will help us make sure that it doesn't break anyone.

I seriously hope that is true :D
