View Full Version : My CPU is the problem

From what I've read so far I've come to the conclusion that my CPU is the problem with my system. A 2.4GHz Pentium 4 just doesn't tax my 5900 enough. I'm only getting 12390 in 3DMark 2001, and most of my games don't play any better than when I had the GeForce 4 Ti4600 in the system unless I use AA and AF. I'd like to upgrade my CPU, but I'm stuck with the 400FSB which can only be upgraded to 2.6GHz. Maybe I'll wait for the Prescott to come out in a couple of months. If I go AMD, I'm guessing an Athlon 64 3400+ would be a great choice. Any CPU ideas out there? Thanks for the advice.

Is there anything wrong with how your games are playing right now? Are they slow to the point of being unplayable?
If not, there's really no need for you to upgrade. The only one you might want to think about is the new AMD socket 939 design which should be released shortly. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it. 2.4 GHz is still pretty good and should be sufficient for most games, even when Doom 3 comes out.

Thanks for the info. I know I'm still on the lower end of the spectrum when it comes to CPU speed. A P4 2.4GHz is nowhere near as good as an AMD 2400+. I know that there are games that are CPU limited or GPU limited. I've certainly played the CPU limited games. I'll be looking to upgrade soon to a 3GHz+ computer. For now, I'll live with my current 2.4GHz CPU. I'm not going to buy another video card until I upgrade this CPU. It would be a waste of money.

That 2.4 you have should clock to 3Ghz. :)
Just overclock that bad boy and enjoy
a free 3Ghz cpu.
That's what I do anyway. :D
EDIT: sorry I just noticed u r using RDRAM.
Your motherboard might not support OCing.

With my 2.4 I got 15k in 3dmark01. So your Cpu should be fine.
