View Full Version : PCI Express Benchies that Muya pointed to
Not sure if this is the right forum to post this...
It has to do with video cards... yet it's not nVidia specific... yet nVidia is involved... and it's not card specific... and it could just as easily be placed in general hardware or hardware rumor mill. LOL! :D
Anywho... I'm sure a mod will move this if necessary.
I'm wondering if the lower 3DMark scores on the PCI express system have more to do with the Prescott having a longer instruction pipe than the Northwood, or if the PCI Express technology is just too much in it's infancy.
What do you think?

I don't know, that might just be the case... I can't imagine how it could have way more bandwidth and be slower. Unless the new drivers are designed to use the bus/system RAM more now that its fast enough, but that seems stupid to me.
I would imagine the same reason that 4x is sometimes faster than 8x, in some situations...

I don't see how there would be any difference at all, since neither of these cards even push the AGP bandwidth limit.

From the front page of Beyond3D (http://www.beyond3d.com):
Another subject that will raise its head increasingly over the coming year is that of the transition to PCI-Express. Changes to AGP rates has appeared to yield little in performance over the years and the common assumption is that the change to PCI-Express will similarly offer few immediate tangible benefits. Dany, however, appears to believe that the advent of PCI-Express will have a significant effect on how future titles are designed by virtue of the point-to-point interface.
"This should allow a new range of algorithms to be possible (like on consoles). You could use the GPU to calculate very quickly zone of dangers when the player is throwing a grenade (physic blast shadowing). The information could then by passed to your AI and Physics engine to help the AI makes a good decision on how to react to this event and to find out which objects should be impacted (where and how) by the blast."
You can find more information on this at Beyond3D. I think it will be absolutely fascinating if we start seeing the bus and GPU get used for purposes like this. Perhaps we are too blinded by AGP and its past and can't look past its shortcomings to new uses that may appear with a new bus.

I looked at those benches the other day.
It seems some things are better some are a little worse.
But all and all I think it's going to be a good chip. :)

I have a feeling it's going to be something like the difference in 4x and 8x,not much at first but maybe in a couple of more years when video cards get faster and more complex and can actualy use the extra bandwith, then will see a difference.

I think since Pci-Express is going to be a more efficient bandwidth technology for pc graphics cardds and periphiels,I think we should witness higher framerates resulting in stabler and smoother framerates.
But as for that 3dMark2001se benchmark, we all know that its more of a subsystem benchmark rather than an isolated video card benchmark.

I wouldn't put a lot of faith in the numbers of products that are not actually shipping.
It's nice to know that the pci-express stuff is actually finishing tests at this point.

To us Gamers PCI-eXpress is nothing more then another transition as from AGP 4x to AGP 8x , 1% performance increase at best  will take forever untill someone will actually take full advantage of it.

I can tell you right now that those RV380 numbers are wrong; I was able to score 3200 on a 400/300 9600 Pro.

I would rather see an external videocard with a power supply much like most cable/dsl modems. But who am I kidding, that ain't gonna happen. Could you imagine the possibilities if it did though? :drooling:
Peace,
