Have a read at this article on theinquirer and tell me what you make of it?

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=13907

The 2nd last paragraph makes it seem that the NV40 doesn't support PS3.0.

Of course it's just a rumour :D

If you read the article carefully it says it doesn't support DX9.1 but that doesn't matter as DX9.1 doesn't exist.
People have been saying DX9.1 will support PS3.0 but in reality ps3.0 support is already in DX9. It just hasn't been supported by hardware yet.

If MS had renamed it to 9.1 this late in the game ATI and NV would be screwed. 9.0c fits great because both ATI and NV cards are DX9 cards.

This way both ati and nv can just write in support with drivers.

It wouldn't matter if they called it DX9999.
It's just a name.
What matters is if the hardware supports the features in the spec.

i.e PS1.4 and PS1.3 They are both in DX8.1 but NV25 couldn't do PS1.4 ...
