Here comes the GeForceFX 5500!!!

Nvidia will soon release another GPU for the entry/midstream level markets.
The new GPU will be called GeForceFX 5500. There are no definitive specs for this GPU except that it will be positioned below the GeForceFX 5700 series. Boards based on this GPU will be available in March. Apparently, Nvidia wants to have another contender in the entry/midstream level markets to go along with the very-successful FX 5700 Ultra. Of course, Nvidia officials declined to comment on the new GPU.

I see a replacement for the Fx 5200 in the works. Im really surprised that nvidia is releasing a new budget video card this late in the Fx 5xxx cycle. Even if this card out performs the Ti4200 it would not be a worthy upgrade since the 6xxx cards are about to be released in the coming months.

Yep, but the FX5500 is slower than the FX5600 even though it has the same NV31 core. :|

Yes, that's the good news. :) The bad news is the PS2.0 speed comparable but less to a FX5600. :| Well, it's still has better PS2.0 support than FX5200 or R9[012]00. So I'd say if the price is right at ~ FX5200 level it'll be a success; let's hope so. FX5600 didn't sell too well because the price - performance ratio was horrible. I'd guess that nVidia has learnt about that mistake and FX5500 will be el Cheapo. :)

and why does anyone need this when the FX5700 non-ultra is so cheap? And even the FX5600 can be had below $100... this is indeed a strange move by Nvidia

Hmm, not a bad idea, a replacement for the FX5200 would be a nice change. If it's only $100 (like the current FX5200), then it would be a very compedative product, and would definatly one-up the current ATI low-end solution (the 9000/9200). If they can be had for $60 like the FX5200 currently is at Newegg, then I see a VERY nice option for those looking to spend very little to get a decent card. Even if it's not quite as fast as the TI4200, the AA algorithm and DX9 "compatability" alone would make it more then worth the money.

Though I must ask, what happened to the FX5300 and FX5400?

I dunno what went wrong with nvidias naming game. The geforce FX 5200 is not a bad card for the price where the 5600 is IMO. The 5600nu performs much like a 5200u without AA or AF. If the card is clocked a little lower than the 5600u it should go over quite well.

Ok I get the name now. the Geforce FX 5500 is much better than the 5300 or 5400 right, just like a Geforce FX 5600 is better than a Radeon 9500 :P

5700LE is coming also, seems to be replacing the 5600XT. And these like the 5600XT and the 5900XT will be silent launches, the real stuff which gets a grand launch is the NV40.

I happen to like my FX5200U very much so. I don't regret buying it one bit. Infact, I am so glad I held out as long as I have. It has been a learning process for me, I have found out how long I can actually hold out on product releases and will eagerly purchase a NV40 regardless of the performance. (It will be great though, I know. ;) ) This card has done two very important things for me, brought me back to Nvidia products and driver quality.

My son wanted UT2K3, so being a good dad I got it for him. (He's a great kid and deserves way more than I can ever give him.) So I made a movie of our play settings. It's always high in NV's Control panel and surprisingly it is high or higher on game settings. Playing at 800x600, though using 4xAA/2xAF! :cool:

Hmm, might want to kick the AA down to 2x and AF up to 4x. There's visually almost no difference between 2xAA and 4xAA (but a big performance hit!), but a very minimal performance hit from lvl4 Aniso compaired to lvl2. Just a suggestion ;)

Seriously, I think ATi and nVidia should concentrate on making WAY more models next generation! I mean, I can still almost tell them apart right now, so they have a lot further to go to utterly confuse the discerning buyer. :p

That's true, ATI should've released the 9300 and 9400, and Nvidia should've released a 5100, 5300, and 5400. And just to make it interesting, they should have the most powerful card of the bunch be the lowest numbered one (a-la the 8500 to the 9000). Oh, or better yet, maybe they should've turned those zeros into something else. Like the GeforceFX 5358, or the ATI 9216. Maybe they could even go as far as decimal places, like the FX5674.2, or the ATI 9302.5. And then of course they'd have the various versions of the pro, ultra, XT, LE, and MX of all those cards. They could've easilly gotten a product line of over a hundred cards out of one chipset, what were they thinking :rolleyes:

Well, I took your advice and started playing that way. It is a bit difficult to tell the AF for me though since it looks great to begin with, though I noticed the effect of switching from 4xAA to 2xAA.

Kids happy and that is pretty much all that matters to me right now. I'll be happy when I got my NV40. :thumbsup: Thanks for the advice. :D

Why be so limiting on the letter combinations? I mean, if they start at the beginning of the alphabet and go on there are 676 options to choose from! :p And they certainly don't have to be satisfied with using them a paltry once...!
