WRONG! He needed the comma because he is using the conjunction to separate two thoughts.

The conjunction seperates the thoughts. That's what it's there for.

"I've seen it but it's still awesome!"

You still need the comma, though as they're two complete thoughts that could have been written out as such.

You wouldn't need a comma if it was written like this:

I've seen it and think it's still awesome.

The two clauses can't be written out separately as they can in the first instance.

I guess we'll have to disagree. I believe that it should have been like so:

"I've seen it but it's still awesome."

If he wanted to use a comma, I believe that he should have said:

"I've seen it, it's still awesome." although a semilcolon would be more appropriate there...

A comma is used to combine a independent and dependent clause. Conjunctions are in place of a comman to join the dependent clause with the independent clause. The word "but" is a conjunction. The conjunction is used correctly with out the comma but it is a incomplete sence. :p He has a direct object but no subject. :D
