And from whom were you hearing good things about Opera? This perplexes me as there are quite a few folks around here (myself included) who don't think Opera is worth the code on which it's written. And they still have the nerve to charge $39 for it.

Firebird still has me, or firefox or whatever. Opera confused me

I prefer Opera over FireFox EVER. Just a matter of preference, though....

I use opera and like it. To be fair, I haven't even bothered to try firefox so I can't really compare the two. Opera is superior to IE. Faster, looks better, and for the most part is more stable.
The only things I don't like about opera are the price, the fact it gets buggy with certain versions of sun JVM, and the stupid bookmark bug they still haven't fixed (won't remember sort order).
All in all, $39 is more than it's worth IMO. $20 is more like it.

Couple things that get me about Opera:
1) It takes them for-flanging-ever to fix some very annoying bugs. It took them about three entire revisions to get the animated .gif bug fixed. In reading through the forums it looks like there are some other pretty significant problems that haven't been fixed in more than a year. Plus at times it seems like the devs suffer from ATI Driver Development Syndrome - fix one thing but break something else.
2) People claim it's noticably faster than anything out there. Lemme tell you folks, I've tried IE, Netscape, Mozilla, FireFox and Opera over the years on a variety of platforms - from Pentium II to Athlon XP, from dial-up to broadband and there is no appreciable speed difference between Opera and its competitors.
3) The Opera community - I thought I've seen some morAns on these and other boards but Opera has to take the cake. When a new preview build is released, they treat it like it was delivered unto them by Jesus Christ Himself. They kiss more arse with the devs there than the Rage3D folks do with Catalyst Maker, and that's saying something.
That said, Opera does have some redeeming qualities. I like its interface and the way it handles tabs and pop-ups better than Avant Browser or Mozilla. I also believe that with the amount of time they have put into Opera and all the platforms it's available on (Sun, Linux, Mac, Windows, PDA) they should receive some compensation for their work. But as Riptide said, $39 definitely isn't worth it. Or at least if they're going to charge that much, make it a one-shot deal with free upgrades for life.
