I sure hope they make one to fit the 9800Pro256 and XT soon.
It's needed badly.

For my card if the bottom of the that cooler is just flat it would never come into contact with the core.
You need a Zalman then....they fit down inside of the shim. My core is overclocked 100mhz past stock.

The shim on R300 (Radeon 9700) cards prevent proper contact between heatsink and chip. However, this is not the case with the 9800 series.

Thanks much for the pics micron -thats what I need unless I try pulling the shim off or knocking it down with a dremel.
Quitch, If I lay a straight edge side to side on my bba 9800pro there is a visible gap above the core. Looking at the bottom of the stock hsf assembly
shows the outside edges have been machined down to clear the shim in order to allow contact. While your statement is true of most 9800's its not the case with the card I'm using...
I removed the shim on the 9500Pro to get better temps with a Zalman 80A. Zalman provides installation with use of the shim...I like many others just removed the shim as it made installation easier. Probably not the best practice...guess I was just lazy at the time.
Since the core is flush with the shim on my 9800Pro, there was no need to remove the shim as full contact was made to the core with the Artic Cooler.
IMO it is always best practice to check any sink's contact with the core for best cooling results. This is true even with stock sinks whether on the cpu, gpu, northbridge, etc. While sinks produced today seem to have better machined bottoms I have seen sinks that were so concave or convex on the bottom that the majority of the contact area was not being made with the core. This combined with the fact that most core surfaces are not truely flat only adds to the heat problems.

Well, the core on my 9800 is not flush with the shim, it looks like it is, but it aint.....
