View Full Version : Installing my VGA Silencer.... by jAkUp
Well, after just receiving my nice shiny new VGA Silencer from Arctic Cooling, I figured I might as well throw up my little adventure for the day...
First, we have me, the stock cooling, and... My ATI hat:D

First step, remove the ATI heatsink! This is my first time removing a stock heatsink off a video card, the barbs proved to be a little tricky on the backside... Finally I get the cooling off, look at that beautiful core!

About half way through the process, a tradegy breaks out... After overtightening one of the screws right under the S-Video connection proved to be more than that little screw can handle. The head broke off, and now its tail is forever lodged inside the poor ATI card. Oh well, good thing there are still 3 left.

And finally, the finished product. Look at how much Harry, my hampster, absolutely loves the card. Maybe later he can play inside the FlowFX style heatsink:angel:

And finally, I present you the finished product. And wow! It's near silent even on the high mode. I love this already:D

Check the last picture he posted. You'll see the sinks are still there. :)

I don't even want to know where that hamster played before he found a home in your gfx card
:D
concerning the screw... depending on its location you might be able to do a little solder job and attach either a wingnut or a screw's head and try taking it out if you want :)
btw how are temps now you reckon? oc improved ?
OCZ copper sinks clearance on 9800P with Artic Cooler installed. (see attached)
Not the best pic but you can see the sinks are not as tall as the tallest cap.

Hey jAk, after staring at your sexy face, that sexy hat and that sexy new card, I've ordered one of those coolers for myself. I haven't tried to OC my 9800 Pro with the stock cooling, but even if the new cooler doesn't do much good, it will still look darn sweet and be nice and quiet. :D
Heh, I broke one of the screws too when attaching mine :)
Nothing too spectacular, Core overclock went from 418 to 430 (stable, not a glitch to be seen) while the memory stayed at 358. However, these things are cheap, and more importantly are slient AND help keep the case cool (since the air is blown out of the back).
All in all, excellent value for money.
Well, I think I'm gonna experiement with the O'C ing soon. Last time I did I used powerstrip to overclock, but what do you guys think the best overclocking utility to OC is? I dont need all the extra features, just overclocking.

Radlinker, 'nuff said.
Do a Google search for it. Once you find the Radlinker home page, you can download just the overclocking component instead of the entire tweak utility. Once it's installed, there's a new tab in your advanced display properties. Make your adjustments from there and you're set. :)

In the pics it just looked like one. :)
I was wondering if that cooler would fit a 256 card.
I do not think it will.
how does the 256mb differ from the 128??

Its a tad bit bigger.
I don't know of anyone who has tried it on a 256 card but as far as mounting that should present no problem. It simply uses the mounting holes on the card. What else would be a problem?

Is the arctic cooler hs relieved around the square metal ring which surrounds the core ? The stock cooler on my bb ati 9800 has the edges slightly machined down so the hs makes contact with core instead of resting on the outside ring.
For my card if the bottom of the that cooler is just flat it would never come into contact with the core.
No, it is flat across the contact area on the bottom of the sink. I get full contact with the core. I checked before completing the installation.
