Download them here...

For WinXP/WIN2K

http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=winxp-2k_40.72

For Win9X/ME

http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=win9x_40.72

They are still beta, but I'm wondering if this is the release they are sending for certification.

Results coming...

I am at work, but want to know performance for GF4 in UT2003! Someone be the lab rat. :D

Algernon reporting for duty, SIR! And I didn't get any cheese for this :(

As per your request, UT2003 Demo:

I ignore the benchmark.exe utility because it doesn't hold detail settings constant. The utility varies it per your system. FWIW I lost 13 FPS in flyby but gained 3 FPS in botmatch to 57 in opengl over 40.71 dets. D3D performance was static.

Using STAT FPS in Deathmatch (where performance matters,) I was riding about 4-6 FPS above my averages with 40.71 dets in OpenGL. Once again, minimal increase with D3D. All detail settings were maxed out in Preferences, 1024X768 32BPP, no AA, no anisotropy.

Q3 and UT: Once again, I noticed a real performance boost in OpenGL over 40.71, about 4-6 FPS in both games. D3D performance increase was negligible.

3DMark2001SE. I went from 11,600 to 11,700 in D3D. Minimal increase.

Conclusion. These drivers improve OpenGL performance but D3D remains unchanged.

Other musings and ramblings.

This is the FIRST detonator set I've used that retained my Digital Vibrance settings upon reboot without disabling Nvidia Driver Helper Service. Visual quality still remains a tad dark but overall the images remain sharp and crisp. The AGP settings dialouge (as per the coolbits tweak) still have no effect. Perhaps that is for the NV28-NV30 chipsets.

I simply installed the drivers over top of 40.71. I was surprised I saw no decrease as the 40 series had always degraded my system performance when installing over a previous Detonator. No crashes, no lockups.

Conclusion: These are the best 40 series detonators yet. The only problem I've encountered is 3D applications are still a bit dark compared to the 29 and 30 series.

My system:

WinXP Pro
Visiontek Geforce 4 ti4600 Not overclocked
AMD XP 2100+ Stock FSB and multiplier.
MSI K7T266 Pro2-RU motherboard.
Soundblaster Audigy.
2X 256MB Crucial DDR @ CAS 2
2X 60GB Western Digital in stripe array.

This is where you're wrong. UPT (benchmark.exe) calls settings from \ut2k3\benchmark\stuff\maxdetail.ini and they are set to:

Hey Guys!

The drivers are faster in Direct 3D in UT2002 Retail Version!

In Phobos2, when you look down to the action i have a minum Frame Rate of 16 FPS and now its on 21 FPS (1024x768x32Bit)!

I have all Settings to the Max, including Lightning and Dynamic Lights on.

My System

Intel Pentium 4, 1800 Mhz (non oc - works at 2.400!)
GeForce 3TI 200 (non oc - works at 220/500)
ASUS P4B Mainboard (Intel 845)
512MB RAM
60 GB 7200 Seagate Barracuda IV HD
Sound Onboard (Realtek - Software 3D Sound in UT 2003)
15,1" TFT

There is ALSO a mindetail.ini These files set the upper and lower limits of detail it would seem.

I've heard it from several people and it would seem to explain why I supposedly lost FPS when I upgraded my processor and graphics card from a GF3 ti500 and AMDXP 1600+ running benchmark.exe when stat fps in games showed quite an increase.

The official word is the retail version is faster than the demo.

However, were your detail settings exactly as they were in the demo?

There are other detail settings available via the console by typing preferences.

Never mind me though, I'm just a skeptical ol' pirate.

One more question though it's off topic: Is there still a very noticable drop in performance when Hardware Sound + EAX is selected in the retail version?

Retail demos are a bit different than the ones in the demo. That's why people are seeing differences in the results (retail: 144/64, demo 159/59 on my machine).

Preferences -command is removed from the retail version, it doesn't work. (http://www.ina-community.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=215586)

And the last, I haven't tested the performance between eax+3dhardware vs software audio.

You have to keep in mind that the textures in the full game are on average two times higher (resolution wise) than they are in the Demo, so I wouldn't be suprised if the demo yelled better results...

Getting back to the original post, thanks mongoose for the excellent write up. Can't wait to try them.

They aren't just for WinXP, Win9x drivers are there too.

So I think a front page edit would be nice :p

Downloading them now, on a poxy modem, at a poxy 4k second.

just faster than 40.71, never really had any bugs with any of the detonators, so i can't say if theres improvement. but it is faster.

MadOnion 3DMark2001SE scores as follows:

1) 40.71 dets: 7929 3D Marks

2) 40.72 dets: 7954 3D Marks

I have a 200+ jump in 3D Mark score since going to the 40 series dets. I like it :)

Plus all my games (Q3, MOHAA, RTCW, BF1942 demo, UT2003 demo) play great.

If you have a GF3 or 4 and run Win98, I cannot say anything other than give these drivers a try :D

A tad bit slower in D3D, but alittle faster in OpenGL compaired to the 40.72, installed right over the 40.71s with no problems. Ive played Tribes2, Q3, UT. UT 2003, Jedi Outcast,SS, DS9,FAKK2 all with no broblems so far so good.

40.41 3dmark 11190 (http://service.madonion.com/compare?2k1=4384842)

40.72 3dmark 11288 (http://service.madonion.com/compare?2k1=4664544)

98 point improvement

These drivers work awesome, not that I've had a problem with any of the det 40 series, but everything has improved from the 40.71's. Installed over the top ofthe older one just as I always have and no probs.

From what I know, yes on SB Live! and yes on Audigy! as of release, because the latest Audigy drivers have that broken.

soundblasters just suck in general..
shoddy drivers. even my aux port on my sb live dont work either..

I'm going with nforce2 integrated audio on my next upgrade.

If you want to discuss Creative's drivers (or lack thereof) there's a thread here (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2227) where you can sound off (no pun intended) to your heart's content. Let's keep this discussion on the topic of 40.72 drivers please.

Thanks and carry on. :)

[Edit: apologies if this is a bit off-topic...I will get around to the 40.72 drivers! :)]

I haven't tried the 40.72 yet (this weekend), but I've got the tab for my GeForce 2 GTS present in the display properties with the 40.71 drivers. You definitely got rid of (i.e. uninstalled) all the old drivers before putting the new ones on, I take it? Which OS? I'm on Windows2000...

[Second Edit: I installed the 40.72s, and the GF2 tab is indeed present in the control panel. Coolbits works, Refresh Force works, RivaTuner works. All is well. Performance is pretty much on par with the 40.71s for me, but everything looks pretty good.]

Cheers,
JND

I installed the 40.72 drivers, and now whenever my computer starts up, I get a RUNDLL error that says:

"Error loading NvQTwk

The specified module could not be found."

I'm running windows XP, with a geforce4 Ti4400 and an MSI KT-7Pro. Anyone else having this problem?

Could someone try installing the 30.87 stereo driver and let me know if it works? Stereo support was broken with the 40.52 and 40.71 drivers. I don't want to spend 3 hrs downloading a 14MB driver on my 21Kbps connection if stereo 3D support isn't going to work. Thanks!
