So I have 2 20" LCD monitors that run 1600x1200 natively and I'm looking for at least a 5700U card to run them. I've tried XFX's dual DVI 5700U, but it would appear that the second DVI is unable to drive 1600x1200 according to the bad image quality I was getting and a "probably" from XFX's rather lousy tech support.

Are there any other dual 5700U cards available right now? If not, how is the VGA output from the 5900/XT/U cards? Would a DVI/VGA card be fine if dual DVI is not to be had? Can the 5900* cards with DVI/VGA drive both outputs at 1600x1200 at the same time?

Oh a related note, I'm really annoyed there are so few dual DVI cards available.

Warning... if you're a dual monitor user you might not want an FX5900 card, they run hot as hell in dual mode:

The FX5700 series seems to run a lot cooler, so I'd look for that instead. I'm sure a lot of people on here will say that 80C is perfectly fine and that the card can handle it, but honestly that just doesn't sit right with me. I know for myself if I had to replace my GF4TI right now, I'd either buy an FX5700NU or Ultra just to be safe (because I use dual display too).

Anyway, I'll do a search online now for dual DVI's for you...

EDIT: bad news, I did a search at NewEgg.com and couldn't find much besides the XFX FX5700U for dual DVI. Here's what I did find around or below that price range, but they're both kinda weak :( :

Asus GF4 TI4200 128DDR dual DVI at $124

Asus FX5200NU 128DDR dual DVI for $119

PNY has a geforce fx 5900 with dual DVI output

On the dual monitor thing

I've been playing for weeks with a dual setup and my fx5900nu does not get any hotter.

Ah! Well there you go right from the horse's mouth :)

And PNY makes a decent card, so try to find one of those then ;)

That article at Tom's hardware still makes me nervous though :bleh:

Tom's just makes me nervous in general. I really wouldn't trust them. Listen to the folks on this board who have experience. Their word (except for a few people of course) is as good as gold. :)

Do you know which of their cards this is? They have a couple in their current line and a couple in their "discontinued" cards.

You can just flash the BIOS with a 9700 Pro BIOS can't you...not worth $25...LOL

You have to hardware mod to change the ID number or the CATs will see it as a FireGL and not install. I have one so I know. After the mod you need to flash the card with a BBA Radeon 9700Pro bios.

Hello,

a while ago i was told that the dual dvi boards are not ture dual dvi.

But if you want to run both monitors in dual dvi you are going to have to buy a PCI video card, and someone recomened to me this setup.

Your Best LCD for gameing run off your DVI port on your AGP card.

Then buy a Nvidia Quadro NVS 280 PCI however this card dose not come with the dual DVi breakout cable so you need to buy it seprate. and run your second LCD off that.

here is the best price i could find on it

http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=322983

i dont know a real place to get the breakout cable but i do know it costs about 30$.

The only step after that is you realize you can run another flat panel off DVi so you run to the store and buy a third : D

Thanks Gator, but unfortunately, most of these either aren't what I'm looking for or aren't readily available in the U.S. I tried to get the Gainward 5700 one 3 times, but each time the place I ordered from sent me the DVI/VGA card, and the dual DVI has since disappeared from Gainward's U.S. site and all the online stores that to carried it. I'm interested in the Inno3D 5900 dual DVI card if anyone knows where to get it in the U.S..

That not being possible, can anyone give me the run down on the quality of the DVI/VGA cards? How is the output of the VGA in comparison? Are there resolution limitation on any of them?

I usto have a LCD + CRT, then i got 2 lcd's and put my old LCD on the VGA port, and i can notice a big diffrence. But then i got usto it and i dont notice it anymore heh.
