Our game reviewer, Brian "V. Slayer" Cochran has finished his gameplay review of X² - The Threat. He doesn't pull any punches with this ambitious title so check it out (http://www.nvnews.net/articles/x2_the_threat) and see if X² is your kind of game.

The review is fairly accurate. The game tutorials suck, documentation is sparse, and the game does get somewhat boring after a while, but it kept me enthralled for a whole month, once I got the hang of it.

I was driven to build more factories so I could get up enough money to purchase an Argon Titan Destroyer (a $64,000,000 ship that looks very similar to the starships in Starship Troopers). Outfitted with Photon Pulse Cannons, Phased Shockwave Generators and Ion Disruptors = very impressive battle visuals. I'm talking 18 separate turrets! The first light fighter/scout craft you get can be purchased for around $500,000 with all the options, with the first heavy fighter costing about $2,000,000 with fulll shields.

By the time I stopped playing, I had 34 factories, over 200 transport ships, 14 corvettes, a carrier, a destroyer and about 30 fighter craft from all the different races.

Fun game. 1.2 patch fixes joystick control issues. Recommended for any fan of the Freespace games, or any space flight sim, for that matter.

Oh yeah, the voice acting is the absolute worst I have ever heard in any game.

Nice feedback RoachMojo.

I gave this game a shot as well. I must say that at first the intro really had me sucked in...very cinematic...but I think it drug on way to long and quickly went from cinematic to campy. I tried to enjoy this game because for one, it looks so freaking amazing! Just a gorgeous game. Looks aren't everything of course. :(

However, I know that there are many gamers out there that do like this kind of game and to those folks that like trading, economic building type games then these is likely right up your ally.

The game review is as good as the X2 tutorial, both suck.

Bryan, next time take your time and do your homework, surely you can do better than this.

It might be a nice touch to actually back your criticisms with some reason. "Both suck" is about as numb-brained as it comes regarding feedback. You're wasting bandwidth with posts like this.

Any idiot can criticize, and most do.

Thanks for the feedback, Cotita. Out of curiosity, why did you think the review sucked? Gimme some particulars, other than you just didn't agree with my viewpoints. I'm always looking for ways to improve my reviews.

TIA
Brian

Good job Brian! I enjoyed reading it even better than your first game review. I think I will steer clear of that game for awhile. I'm still kinda locked in to Morrowind whenever I have the time, which lately is kinda sparse.

I missed out on all the flak today...

FYI there is a new demo out for X2 that is playable (not just rolling like first one)

It is 137 megs. "This demo offers five tutorials (Basics, Trade, Fight, Build, Think) as well as a test universe to explore at will." You can d/l it from the following mirror sites:

Thanks, Max. :D

Just a note, but frustrated gamers only need to browse the Egosoft forums for help, as the community there is quite mature and helpful. It helped me considerably, as the provided manual seems to be purposefully missing key information.

Yup, great, if somewhat frustrating game. The primary enemy was my favorite part. Reminded me of the Shadows from B5. Freaky ships.

The developers are known for adding additional content as patches in previous X-universe games, so I am merely waiting for some changes and additions and then I will go back to it.

The graphics are simply breathtaking, they really are. I had my best friend over and he literally had to sit down slowly, his jaw hanging open in disbelief (I had flown to a particular *secret* sector where I had rallied the fleet, and it just had to be seen to be believed. Absolutely majestic).
