is the p4 with HT really worth the price? my computer sports a 533fsb, so if i wanted a p4 with HT i have to get a 3.06ghz model, so is it worth it performance wise for the price you pay?

I don't think the Pentium 4 is worth the price you pay. I had one and even with its 800 fsb it was hardly faster than my Athlon. Then the memory controller on my P4 board went south (after 2 months), taking the processor with it. Fortunately I had a spare NF7 board lying around and that's what I'm using right now.

But if you have to stick with Intel, any Pentium 4 processor will give you an improvement over your current Celeron. The 512 kb of L2 cache will make a difference compared to the 128 that's on the Celey. If your board can support the 800 fsb processors, a better value would be either the 2.6 or 2.8 GHz models as those can be had for less than $200 now.

/me echoes Sat

HT isn't pure hype...but I haven't seen a substantial difference between it and current AMD procs.

yeah, im not a great intel fan my self. but this server i got was a good deal i thought, and for full linux support out of the box, what the heck yuo know. and ibm makes some great quality stuff anyhow. maybe when this thing just cant be upgraded anymore and i have a need for more speed, i'll drop a athlon64 and a motherboard to support it. maybe by then they will actually have a cpu that actually has a clockspeed of over 3ghz by then lol

A 3.06 P4 will completely out pace the Celeron which are terrible performers.

Yes, anything that is not a Celeron will be a step up. :) AMD is just a much better buy in most cases.

yeah most deffinelty, this will probably be my last intel related purches. unless they become topdog again for performance, even then, i probably wont buy it.

amd are a great buy for the fact that they perform well and cost 50% less. and if you have a boring rainy day, you can tinker with overclocking to pass the day away!

speaking of over clocking, someone tell me how to over clock this peice of junk thats in now, i need a reason to buy a new cpu sooner lol

Considering that it's a server, with a server-grade motherboard, overclocking will be impossible. Ain't no way 'round it either except to start building a new machine from scratch.

well that sucks. i guess i'll take a hammer to it(no, not the amd "hammer") so then i'll just tell my self, "oh look what broke" and then go buy a new one. lol

Also it's an OEM system which will remove ALL overclocking options anyway.

is that because its a intel machine? if it had a amd could i overclock it?

OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer

Dell, Gateway, HP, Sony, IBM - those are OEM companies

Doesn't matter if you had an AMD or Intel system, if it has one of those brand names on it you wouldn't be able to do any sort of overclocking.

OEM=originally empty machine

The Celeron is a modern day 386SX. :)

In other words, it's crap.
