View Full Version : UltraShadow info/use-ability on NV36?
Ok, so far all I know about Ultrashadow is that it's an nv proprietary rendering method... it has to do with shadows .... and it'll be used in doom3...
Um, is there any MORE info on this floating around?
Are nv36 cards really gonna benifit from ultrashadow? Or do they lack the hp necessary??
I'd like to gather as much useable ultrashadow info as possible in this thread... this feature needs some attention (and needs to be better understood)...
:)

there is an article on b3d concerning this...
http://www.beyond3d.com/previews/nvidia/nv35/index.php?p=2
basic feature over-view so to speak...
-edit-
whether they will benefit or not from this feature remains to be seen but we find out sooner rather than later I think...

What cards are using nv36 and which are nv40?
Better yet... what exactly is my 5900SE running on, so I can compare what everyone is talking about, to my card? I looked on that BEYOND3D site, but I could not find the chipset thingy for which my 5900 is running. The best guess I could make was Nv35, but compared to the NV36 which I know is running the 5700, makes me think 5700 is better, even thought the 5900SE beats out the 5700 Ultra
Is it only beating out the 5700 Ultra because of the memory pipeline configuration?

5900SE is the NV35, I was under the impression 5700 series was NV36.

5900SE is lower clocked NV35, and your 5900Se has a 256 bit memory interface along with a full nv35 marchitecture. Thats why its so much better than the nv36 aka 5700/5700 Ultra which has 128 bit memory interface and also somewhat neutered marchitecture compared to the nv35
Ultrashadow is GL_EXT_depth_bounds_test in OGL. Only NV35/38 and NV36 supports and exposes Ultrashadow, NV30/31/34 do not support or exposes GL_EXT_depth_bounds_test.
NV36 can be considered half of NV35, less pipelines, 128bit memory bus instead of 256bit etc etc.

It'll be used in Doom III (and all Doom III engine based games) and in Abducted (http://www.contrabandent.com/abducted_info/index.html) as well.
Are nv36 cards really gonna benefit from ultrashadow?Yes.

Read the Beyond3D link posted above.
It's basically a way to simplify/minimize shadow calculations. If anything it should speed up games that take advantage of it because there's less for the graphics card to do.
