Some pics of what I am talking about. Taken with a 5900NU@5950 and 56.56 drivers. All quality set to the highest in game (cept AA) and in drivers also.

The rocks just in front of me are dark..
http://home.comcast.net/~dfall/Farcry/5900/Lighting/1.jpg

Walk one foot further, and BAM its like someone hit a light switch..
http://home.comcast.net/~dfall/Farcry/5900/Lighting/2.jpg

Look at the rock in the background to the right.. suddenly dark..
http://home.comcast.net/~dfall/Farcry/5900/Lighting/3.jpg

This time, just the opposite, lights on..
http://home.comcast.net/~dfall/Farcry/5900/Lighting/4.jpg

One foot further.. lights off..
http://home.comcast.net/~dfall/Farcry/5900/Lighting/5.jpg

Look to the right, towards the dock. That huge rock has the lights on..
http://home.comcast.net/~dfall/Farcry/5900/Lighting/6.jpg

Move a tad farther, and the lights are suddenly "off".. If someone is standing over there, its going to be hard to see them...

It also happens in NFS: U. It started with the 52.16 drivers, and is still a problem.

There are more games with that problem. I've played several games (Can't think of what the names are anymore as I've played way too many since) that have the lights on/lights off effect

Wouldn't this be the shader optimization of the 50.xx series? did you try 4xxx at all to see if it still has the same problems?

It started for me with the 52.16 drivers. I dont think it was in the 4x.xx series, at least I didnt notice it.

It may have somthing to do with the shader optimizations becasue I have had no trouble with Far Cry and this driver set on my MX 440.

The 4x.xx series solves all the lighting issues I know about (edit: meaning, the ones I have that I know about).

I believe OWA is correct. The lighting/shadow issues are related to the Unified Compiler optimizations in the 5x.xx drivers.

Other affected games:

1. Splinter Cell. No soft light beams and no shadows in buffer mode.

2. Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance. No shadows.

3. Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb. Most pixel shaded objects are purple/pink instead of natural color. The intro screen has a purple/pink teint.

These are some of the worst examples, but I'm sure there're more.

Well, It's happening to me now. Thats so strange, I never noticed it before. Could the shader compiler have screw up non shader cards such as my MX 440?

You can add Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (and the appropriate expansion packs) to the mix of games that have lighting issues with the 50.xx series drivers. I experianced them myself recently ... took screenshots to post here and forgot about it. The screenshots are gone as I uninstalled those games recently.

Anyway, the lighting problems will happen on the stage where it's all set in the snow. Look up in the treebranches - some of them nearer ones will be dark, the fatherest ones will be light, and some will even flat out disappear alltogether. It's was annoying to say the least! :p :)

dunno bout the other games mentioned, but ati does the same thing w/ FarCry, making me think that at least in this instance it's the game code rather than the driver:

http://www.darkvengeance.net/test/FarCry2_ati.jpg

edit: actually.. i need to correct myself.. the issue described in the fist 2 screenshots on this thread (with the rocks directly in front "lighting up") isn't exhibited by either the nvidia or the ati.. i'm still running 53.03, however the OP mentioned this began with the 52.16 drivers.

what did stick out to me tho, happens w/ both cards, and that's the rock textures changing when you take a step forward from a certain angle. this happens in multiple places, but in my examples it happens to the rock directly right of the target cursor....

The 53.03s actually seemed close to working correctly for the demo (for me anyway) and if I was still playing the demo I'd probably be using those.

I hope they (crytek) do fix whatever issue causes the sudden change in textures although maybe it could be fixed by just tweaking some of the LOD distance variables. I played around with that for a while but could never get completely satisfied with my changes.

I thought the lighting and sudden texture changes were different though. I get the sudden changes with both nvidia and ati but the abrupt change in lighting I only get with nvidia and the 5x.xx drivers (I think). It kind of creates the same effect of something suddenly popping into view when you barely change perspective but they seemed a little different to me. I could be wrong though.

well, i saw nothing in the notes that made me want to try the 56.56 drivers.. and it's a limited release anyway, but I haven't been able to reproduce the the lighting issues with farcry mentioned in this thread with the 53.03.

The drivers are done, they are only trying to fix the UT2004 performance bug before releasing them themselves.

I cant believe that you dont think the game profiles is worth the upgrade itself... Thats the best feature in a long time.

i'm not sure what 'done' has to do with anything.. i handn't realized i said they were 'unfinished'. i said they were rather 'limited' in their release. they are not available from nvdida's site, and afaik evga, abit, and bfg (erroneously named 59.59) are the only partners offering them for downloads. i'll wait for a general release when a 'fixed' version is available.

hardocp..? hmm..

as for game profiles, yes a nice feature i agree, but i can wait. the 9800pro is in my main pc atm anyways.

There is nothing wrong with Brents reviews.

The point I was getting at is, they lighting issue wont be getting fixed before nVidia releases it, all they are doing is trying to fix the UT2004 bug. Perhaps next release.

And the lighting issue is still there with the 56.64's.

OWA

It mentions lighting issues will be fixed in the next release in the "release notes" (although, for Xpand Rally). I guess we need to make sure they know it's an issue for other games but I'm hoping if they fix it for one, it'll fix it for all of them. For Far Cry it mentions the "fog" issue will be fixed in the next release.

The fog issue I believe is what makes the trees look terrible.

Yeah and that's a little disappointing since it is correct with the 53.03s. I hate when drivers break things that were working.

Anyway, I hope they have another release sooner this time around since it'll be disappointing to have to wait for months before the lighting issues are fixed.

Well, this new release is the final word of the 'optimisation'. Clearly, Farcry looks terrible. Sadly, but my old Radeon 8500 produces much better picture. From the screenshots I see 27-32 frames, wonder what Nvidia thought...

Good side is the game profile, nice feature, hopefully ATI is going to code it in as well...
