I was receiving 1.5/128 and my isp just started offering double bandwith for only 10 bucks more a month, so naturally I jumped on it.....well.....I'm supposed to be getting 3000/256 and look!!!.....I nearly fell over!!! My avg is anywhere from 4.1-4.3 downs and according to DSL reports I'm getting consisten 310-350 ups! I love my isp!!!!! :D

Hehe, you have no idea how long I've waited for this. I was cursing my isp cuz everyone I know has at least 1.5 which I had (actually was getting 1.9), but they all get anywhere between 300-600 ups and my ups sucked bigtime at 150. Now I get like T2 on my downs and I get about 300-350 on my ups.....oh yeah......I'm happy.....hehe..... :)

My isp was raising the rates on the 1.5 by $5.00, from 44.95-49.95 (39.95 if I had cable tv). The 3K/256 was just 10 bucks more, so I pay 59.95 now.

If I had cable tv, which I don't, cuz I never watch tv anyway and my b/f has 250+ digital channels anyway, hehe, I'd get 10.00 off that and only pay 49.95 for the 3K. The fact that I own my own modem took 5 bucks/mo off it too........I'd be paying like 64.95 without my own modem. Does that make any sense?

I don't think 59.95 is too much considering alot of other folks pay just 10 bucks less for 1/2 of this, and I have double a T1 on my downs. My friend has DSL and is paying 90.00/mo for just 768/350 or something like that, so I think I did ok..... :)

man, I am paying $60/mo for 1.5mbit/128k upstream, and I checked it with DSL reports and it comes out as a half mbit/128, I think verizon is trying to rip me off.

You're in Milipitas........doesn't San Francisco get killer speeds too with attbi? I thought they did.....hmm.

thcdru2k
10-05-02, 08:17 PM
milpitas is still like an hour from san francisco, at&t cable is more expensive that pacbell dsl, and about two years ago when i first got my dsl, at&t cable wasn't offered in my area yet, i'm still not sure if it is. i have like "old" phone lines. milpitas is pretty ghetto, lots of houses are 20-30+ years old. i'm also like 11,000ft from the station or whatever its called. 384/128 for $39.99 but its only 650/112 for me.

Alybe
10-05-02, 08:29 PM
Hehe, it's called a CO. I didn't know Milipitas was that far away from SFO.

I decided against DSL here cuz, #1, it's much slower than my cable...hehe. #2 it's like this dial in thing they have to do.....sucks.
#3, I'd have to switch my local phone company to Sprint, and they're just more expensive than the phone company I'm with now, so no need for me to do dat :p

DSL doesn't offer me nearly as much as I have now and I'm supposed to have a dynamic ip, but mine hasn't changed in the 3 rs I've had cable, so why would I switch now? :)

thcdru2k
10-05-02, 08:31 PM
yeah, if i could i'd switch to cable, it probably would be faster. i use to have 5 static ips for like $79.99, but yeah kinda pointless, and i got banned from a lotta stuff..and kinda got useless lol. got a router, with the router i don't gotta do that dial in thing, its automatic.

Alybe
10-05-02, 08:52 PM
Yeah, routers are cool. I'm gonna be getting one myself. I run a few servers, off my friend's pc's and I'm itching to get one going on here as well.

Yo lady! Tell Cox to come on over here and buy Charter out!! :p

My upload is only 256k and it sucks when I'm paying Socom on my PS2. If Sony's servers nominate me as the host (which is often and I can't back out of it) I can barely handle 16 players. :(

If I use voicechat while hosting, everyone lags, since the bandwidth needed for the host for voicechat is quite a bit compared to just regular players. Ugh! :(

Alybe
10-05-02, 10:45 PM
I do alot of hosting running games off my pc too, and this is why I'm so happy Cox got off the pot and started offering more ups.

I was getting barely 150 ups b4! Ick!! Not only did latency suck for the people connecting to me, but I could only have like 3-4 people without it being lag city. I've been waiting for 3 yrs for this.....lol.

I'm supposed to only be getting 256K ups but somehow, I'm getting 300-400, so it's much better now. I also use upload speeds alot due to the servers I run as well. Try getting movies or games onto a shell at barely 150K......it was horrible.

may i suggest the d-link d-704p from newegg. i'm currently using it on a dsl network of 3 computers. all computers are using windows xp, and no problems what so ever. i can transfer files from all computers. it's also one of the cheapest routers availible but it isn't cheap on features. its a four port 10/100mb switch router combo, with a paralel port that acts as a print server, which works with most printers except for lexmarks. the only thing that it doesn't have is an uplink port to expand the network to beyond 4 computers. i don't really need more than 4 so i'm fine. it's been running for two months straight now, and not once have i needed to unplug the router at all.

i spent over $100 bucks a on linksys cable dsl router with usb support, that worked for a little, but failed. it seemed as if the ports on the router were quite sensitive, and were easily damaged. it is now a piece of junk.

I was actually thinking of going wireless. I have a friend who's got like 6 pc's linked together in his home and they're all routed wirelessly. He's got a Lynksys wireless router with 128 bit encryption, so it's very secure. I think it's really awesome and very convenient. Granted, it's more expensive, but I live in a 1BDRM apt and hate the though of all those wires being all over the place and then having to drill into my walls.... :p

ehh my friend's house is also on a wireless network. i couldn't notice any differences even with file transfers among computers. he used a d-link router with 256bit encryption. so it had to be a di-614+. i'm not sure if this is a problem, since the majority of wireless routers are on the 2.4ghz band, and you live in an apartment..could that possbily create a problem with other people using 2.4ghz phones? whichever one you choose, upgrade the firmware and use latest drivers. my friend says its vital for using windows xp with wireless routers. unlike regular routers, they actually have a difference in performance and stability.

newegg has a deal on the di-614+, its only $90 after shipping and handling and the $30 mail in rebate.

I don't trust 802.11 even with 128 bit encryption. You can still have APs you don't know about and people can get in. I have bluetooth enabled on my mobo and I have a transmitter/receiver, but I don't have any other devices or computers with it, so eh, I guess I won't use it. Just enhanced CAT-5 for me.:D
