You don't need PS1.4 to be DX8.1 compliant because DX8.1 also brought in PS1.3.
That's why the GF4Ti is DX8.1.
PS 1.4 is optional.

True, but to be fair, PS 1.2 and 1.3 add very little over PS 1.1.
PS 1.4 is a fair bit more advanced than PS 1.1 - it didn't do ATI a great deal of good back in the day, however, as the overall performance of GF4 was better than that of the R200.
PS 1.4 is useful now in cases where PS 2.0 is overkill yet PS 1.1 is not quite adequate (I believe HL2 will use a number of PS 1.4 shaders where supported). The same can't be said for PS 1.2 and 1.3, however.
Does the GFFX series support PS 1.4? (as a PS 2.0 part, it should in theory). I seem to remember reading somewhere that GFFX still only supports PS 2.0 and 1.1?

Yes. If you support 2.0 you support all older models too.

Incorrect. There are benchmarks showing gfFX running PS1.4 out there.

3dfx died in what? 2002? I know they died before the geforce4's came out. Nvidia works at least 2 card generations ahead so they obviously were already working on the fx5800 and fx5900, so it was too late to use 3dfx tech in them since those chips had started before 3dfx died. thus the nv40 is the first card that had started production a few months after 3dfx employees were hired. 2 years later its almost done and about 4 months from now we will begin to see it on store sheleves and newegg

Nvidia brand was Geforce, 3Dfx's brand was 3dfx, drop the 3d add a geforce!

well yea but it took time for nvidia to buy 3dfx, in the meantime nvidia begin working on their fx card. later on 3dfx employees joined to begin work on the nv40 2 years before its released. the fx 5800 and fx5900 were too far in research at this point to implement any 3dfx tech

well no you don't need it. Look @ DX8.1 specs.
DX8.0 meant PS 1.0 and 1.1
DX8.1 meant PS 1.3 and 1.4
1.4 is just an option.
OK I got it straight now. DX 8.1 brought in PS 1.3 and PS 1.4. So to be DX 8.1 compliant, you need one or the either.

Factiod:
3DFX made the annoucement that it was selling its assets to NV on Dec 15, 2000: http://zdnet.com.com/2100-11-526472.html?legacy=zdnn
The GFFX was billed at the NV30 launch as the first product made from the input of ex-3dfx engineers. Given that most of the ex-3dfx engineers moved over in early 2001 to NV that gives them enough time to have input.
Besides the GF2 lost every IQ test against the V5 when they looked at AA. NV new back then that RG was a better AA method than OG but NV chose not to implement it right away.

It also brought PS1.2.
Cards called DX8.1: Parhelia, Xabre, Trident XP4
Fact: R2xx is the only DX8 generation card that supports PS1.4.

Well if the 300 dollar NV40 is just 128ram, I might just buy another radeon 9800pro for this rig. Meh, I am not spending 500dollars for a video card.
