I highly doubt nvidia is gonna use ram past 1200MHz. If they even had faster ram, its too expensive and in small quantities too. They may be saving the faster ram for the nv45 or even nv50. as far as I know, the fastest nv40 is gonna be fx6900u at 550/1200 but if they really use 16 pipes it may be more like 400/1000

The expense and lack of availability of DDR2 didn't keep them from using it with NV30.

Some things to consider:

The first NV40 cards won't appear sooner than May and will probably be $500. A month or two later, their might be cheaper versions (think 128mb non-ultra). Truely reasonably priced cards based on NV42 and NV43 probably won't show up until after summer.

IMO: if you want to spend $500 on a really high-end card, wait for NV40. But if your budget is under $300, go ahead and get a Radeon 9x00.

they lost money on the nv30 too. very high clocks cost them more than they made, so thats why they pratically paperlauched it and only made very few of those. You dont see any around, the fx5900 has taken over and no one wants a fx5800 either
