In response to the movie wars topic, where we listed the best. Lets now list the worst:cool:
I shall start by naming:
U-571 - Possibly the most annoying film I have ever seen, first of all it was the british that captured the enigma not the americans, but try telling that to hollywood:rolleyes:, second of all it has those typical boyish characters. They all look the same and you cant tell who has been killed
What are your worst war movies?:)

Wow, really? I loved that movie myself, it didnt do the traditional hollywood of making the Americans the good guys and automatically dehumanise the enemy.

Not true. Firstly, the movie U-571 was not based on the naval career of the German U-boat U-571. More or less, it was based a little on the aspects of the careers of U-110, U-570, U-559, and U-505.
On June 4th, 1944 the United States captured its first enemy ship. That boat was the U-505. After the attack by a group of vessels ( The carrier Guadalcanal and her 5 escorts the Pillsbury, Pope, Flaherty. Chatelain, and Jenks) the Germans' set the scuttling charges and opened the ballasts in hopes of sinking the ship before anyone could board. The boarding party disarmed the charges and set the valves, preventing the ship from sinking. They collected several enigma code books, charts, manuals, and other items before the ship was brought back to port in the US. A Lieutenant David was given the Medal of Honor for the feat.
The U-571 was sunk by an Australian Sunderland Aircraft during a surface battle on her 11th Combat Patrol on the 28th of January, 1944 (as a side note, I was born exactly 38 years later :D ). All of her crew that managed to escape parrished in the freezing water before help could arrive.

The movie still makes it sound like the Americans were the only ones that actually captured a enigma device, even though Britain did it sliiiightly earlier;)

and? so, both the americans and british captured enigma machines? who cares who was first, we were working together and that is all that matters.
I liked the movie U-571. I like most war movies, probably my favorite is the Longest Day. That movie was awesome.

I am really slow today, sorry. LOL, I edited my post.:D
I suggest you read http://home.us.net/~encore/Enigma/enigma.html
The Brits took away the credit of cracking first German code from Poland. And where in the hell did US come in all of the sudden? Give me a break. First Enigma machine was built in 1930 at University of Poznan, Poland. I hate when people are trying to change history for their own benefit.

So then I should ignore your post then? because it has nothing to do with my post.
Do whatever you want, I'm just giving a little insight on WHO cracked the first code and WHO build the first machine.

Oh, I have no problem with who did it first, in fact, I don't care, you would have found that in my first post, but don't worry, I am in no way trying to start anything with you.;)
The post just reminded me of movie "Enigma" which was total bullox. "The authorities turn for help to Tom Jericho, a brilliant young mathematician and code breaker" <- RIGHT.
Where ever there is talk about Enigma, all I hear is that the Brits first cracked the code and build it.

The argument wasn't who built it or cracked it. It was who captured it.
I said it reminded me of a movie, that's my choice: "Enigma"

The Poles built it, they helped the English crack it, some brits stole one, the Americans stole 2 others in 1944, ULTRA basically knew everything the Germans were doing, the brits told the US the germans secrets, the US told the brits Japan's secrets, blah blah blah the good guys won the war and the bad guys are dead. Details schmetails, Europe was freed from the clutches of Hitler, and thats really all that matters.

Pearl Harbor was an abomination in my opinion. I realize they couldn't make a blockbuster movie out of a docu-drama, but the whole love story didn't sit with me.
Full Metal Jacket in my opinion is one of the greatest movies ever; right along with Apocalypse Now. They both showcase the darker side of war that is all-too-often left out of WWII-era movies, as they tend to romanticize war (that ties back in to my example of Pearl Harbor).

Oh yeah its in the US. Don't bother saying the British and Russians don't glorify their role in the war. :p And its not like U-571 is the only movie Hollyweird embellish or make up stuff.
here's the link for the info intercede007 provided about the various German subs captured: http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq97-1.htm
