View Full Version : Need help with FX 5900SE and tearing in ET

03-16-04, 07:18 AM
I'm running a FX5900SE in Win XP Pro w/SP1, and when Im playing RTCW ET I get all kinds of flashing angles, I assume that is tearing.
Useing 5664 drivers, also tried 5656 drivers. All driver settings are at default.
This is the only game so far that I get this problem.
Here's the things I've tried to get rid of the problem:

set max fps and displayRefresh to 85 w/vsync enabled
set max fps and displayRefresh to 85 w/vsync disabled
Tried above combinations with trilinear and bilinear

Is there anything else I can try?

Maybe try the 53.03 or 53.06 drivers?

I don't think they support the 5900SE card. I'll have to check.
But I was able to eliminate a good amount of the tearing by setting the maxfps to 0, and left the refreshDisplay at 85.

That's all very well and good but what you described sounds like rendering errors as opposed to tearing. Try older drivers as suggested, if the problem persists, try and post a screen shot.

I use the 53.06 drivers on my FX5900XT, the SE is an older model, but the same card, so the SE's should be supported in both 53.03 and 53.06.

Ok, I tried the 5303 drivers and still get the same results,, here's some screenies of what happens. (look near the crosshairs)

That type of artifact in the last pic, is what Ive seen when overclocking, on the memory I think. Funny thing is, first time I ever saw this, was on my GF3 and Wolfie :p, try lowering the ram speed by 10mhz

OK, I tried underclocking a full 100 down, even tried overclocking, tried with all different combinations of the settings in ET, but I still get the same results.
What sucks is, this only happens with ET and no other games.

Try setting the r_swapInterval to "1" in the configuration file - etconfig.cfg. I just checked and see that I have multiple config files - one in the root game directory and another in the profiles directory. I would go ahead and update all of them.

Or you can change the value in the console after starting the game. Enter r_swapinterval 1. You might also want to enter vid_restart to make sure the setting takes.

r_swapinterval of 0 equates to vsync off. Setting it to 1 may reduce or even eliminate the tearing.

Hopefully, what you're experiencing is tearning, but the screenshots you posted appear to be the result of a different problem. I experienced a very similar problem to yours in Call of Duty with a Radeon 9800 Pro, which was related to a graphics driver problem.

I'm not sure if you can actually capture the tearing effect in a screenshot. But if you could, it would be very difficult since the screenshot would have to be taken at the exact same time the tearing occurs.

I tried the r_swapInterval to "1" and I still get the same thing, thanks though.

Turned off Compress Textures and it seems to be a lot less now, but it still happens.
What I am noticing too is that it seems to happen only on certain maps.
The installation of ET is a clean one, on a freshly loaded system, and does not have any mods in it yet either.

OK, I've tried all kinds of things now, drivers, settings in drivers, settings in game, I even flashed the bios on the card, and I still get the same artifacts/tearing, whatever it is,,It's driving me CRAZY! and making game play tough. Like I said before it seems like it happens more on some maps then others, and it only happens with ET.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing this??

I don't see it? What tearing. You may want to enable AF as well, your screenshots look ugly. :(

Look near the crosshairs in each picture, I hope you can see the difference ;)
I didnt have AF enabled just incase that might have been causing it, but it happens with and without it.

Here's a demo that shows what happens. It happens 3 times in it, but it actually happens a lot more, plus I get, what looks to be like white triangular flashes, I guess FRAPS missed some of it, since it's the demo version. OK I converted the clip to mpeg and its alot smaller now, about 1.5 MB, plus I added a 2nd clip.

Please take a look at them.
