Y'all do realize that April 14th is going to be the paper launch of the nV40 and cards won't be available until July....right? :eek2:

But then what would we all do for speculation

I mean sure the other board would heat up with flame wars and pissing contests about which card was faster in whatever synthetic benchmark :fanboy:, driver cheats :zzzz:, image quality :crosseye:, and all that oh-so tedious stuff, but what would we speculate about? NV50? R500?

thats getting a bit far ahead of ourselves :D we could speculate on refreshes of r420 and nv40 :D

We quite don't know when ATI will launch their next gen GPU so who knows who will be first to the market with retails boards.

"If the NV40 is launched next month, it marks the end of a long wait for the part, which was originally roadmapped for a late 2003 debut. When that was the case, Nvidia had a revised version, the NV45, on its roadmap for a Q2 2004 introduction."

you guys do know this is the "new" nv40, the origional nv40 got cancelled and nvidia has renamed the nv45 to the "new" nv40 which will be paper launched on the 13th of april which is about 3 weeks away now! This could rain on ati's r420 even if the r420 appears first in stores which it probably will, people will read nv40 reviews and if its faster they will just wait till the nv40 is in stores. a few will buy the r420 cause they like ati and/or cant wait any longer

Come 'n..

NV kills NV40 for NV45 and the inq states 3 weeks ago that R420 will launch first. All indicates that NV will paper launch while ati will follow it's 30 day launch plan

come on? Haven't u at least read Paul or the rumour boyz hav ebeen speculating. The NV40 should have been launched q3 2003 but was scrapped but for all intents and purposes, the original nv45 (which maybe now the nv40) is still on course for its original launch date according to various roadmaps seen around the web before. So a huge paper launch is probably unlikley in terms of like the nV30 launch.

Also I have not heard one squeak of r420 launch of availability. In any case, no one IHV will be left waiting to get thier products out as late as possible. The two launches and retail availabilty around maybe well in q2 this year (as speculated by some) will be close from both IHVs IMHO. I just think that people with the "upgrade itch" aren't likely to wait long if they can satisfy their craving asap so both IHV's have to act pre-emptively making their GPUs availble in retail quickly or follow the otehr asap. A few ppl have also said that AIB parnters already have had samples and some are finishing of their nv40 boards for launch.

Well they might be close enough for that not to matter. It appears they will be launched at the same time, could even be the same day. Other news is that it looks like nv40 isn't 16 pipelines & r420 is 12.

I'm sure we will know more soon enough.

If indeed the NV40 was held back and nv45 was pushed forward as the next "next gen flagship". you can be sure NV will put out the original nv40s for maybe the mainstream market-ie the higher end of mainstream...if that makes sense.
Jsen Hsuang did say that NV were going to launch 5 product lines. In which case it leads me to belive that the NV40(now not nv40) derivatives as well as nv45 (now nv40) derivatives.

I hope this is true. :)

Wonder when the R420 will be launched?

I figured ati would be first to bat.
But maybe not.

bad google translation....

While too nVidias already a concrete publication date admits to newest pixel accelerator is, it was so far quite quiet around ATis R420. In the heart of Hanover on the CeBIT are there behind locked doors however far more to see, than the petrol normal visitor gets to face.

Thus it oozed from reliable source that also the Canadians their newest chip launchen in April - obviously almost at the same time with ore competitor nVidia, who anvisiert 14 April as product start. In the middle of April seems to go thus the next round in the fight for the fastest diagram chip of the world into a new round.

Besides we can confirm now that the R420 with altogether twelve pipelines will be delivered. The nV40 from the house nVidia will bring, possesses it meanwhile probably not on 16x1 or 8x2 to pipelines however an integrated hardware decoder. Besides no Paperlaunch seems to appear at both companies. Opposite us insured some manufacturers of all Coleur that in time to the Launch a multiplicity at maps of many manufacturers will be available. On first Samples is to be counted already in the near future.

If this is true I am really impressed

Well, the NV40 is already shown at the Cebit it seems. And there's a bit of information on the other parts also (they say 2 times faster than previous gen)

Cebit was for NVIDIA the occasion to expose massively its range of announced GeForce PCX a few weeks ago. Charts of reference were exposed at all the partners of NVIDIA. Solutions NCV Express train of NVIDIA were thus much more visible on the show than those of ATI what is logical since these last were still not announced officially. According to a partner of NVIDIA, the frequencies of operation of GeForce PCX are identical to their equivalent GeForce FX.

NVIDIA, just like ATI, did not choose Cebit to announce its new products. We however could see turning a specimen of their next generation of GPU. It thus seems functional and launching should be done in April like had recently implied it the CEO of NVIDIA.

A partner of NVIDIA could In addition give us some information on the NV4x. range to the top-of-the-range version, three variations should be launched: NV41, NV43 and NV44, which would be thus respectively twice more powerful than the NV38, NV36 and NV34 (5950, 5700 and 5200).

the launch date of April13 doesnt officially says that in 30 days more or less there will be cards at retail. if i remember well the Geforce2 GTS was available at retail just -3days- after the lauch. :) and the Nv30 was at retail ~2 months later of the launch in comdex.. off course the yield problems of the later was the main reason for the delay. but if there are no major problems for ATI and NVdia at the manufacturing the card .. then ~30 days before launch is quite reasonable to be expected .

there is no reason to rush the NV40 and R420 ,there are no games yet that will take advantage (or be the selling point) of the NV40 and R20. Hl2 can still be released as originally planned in SEpt 30 but 2004 :) and there are no news of Doom3 launch date , a summer launch is expected. Stalker is schedule for late in the year . Farcry in the other hand is a diferent story ,but that game doesnt have the momentum that games like HL2 and Doom3 have to make people drop $500 for a new video card :)
