Well I just installed my new 5600 256mb card last night and I gotta say, I don't know why everyone is complaining. Im running the 56.64 drivers and I tested the Far Cry demo 2 and Battle field vietnam. I've run a 9600XT and I can't notice any diff in Farcry. The water looks exactly the same, the graphics are still gorgeous so even if its using PS 1.1 or whatever I can't notice any change. Besides, how often in a fps do you stop in the action and think gee that effect looks slightly better on the ati. In far cry on my 9600XT the game had numerous graphical glitches. Textures missing or flashing, some wired white lines flashing across the screen. The only thing I notice on the 5600 is that lighting problem in Farcry.
Battle field vietnam runs smooth as anything. Now where is that NV40 :D

Let me ask you a few questions:

1. What resolution are you running the game at? 800X600?

2. Do you have all of the effects turned on? Probably not

3. Are you using AA or AF? Definitely not

In sum, the 5600 is a lower-end card that will run DX 9.0 games at lower resolutions like 800X600. However, if you want to run at high resolutions, forget about it. I had a 5600 and it was absolute crap. My GeForce4 Ti 4200 would beat the pants off it in DX 8.0 games. The 5600 is still too slow to run DX 9.0 games decently.

I totally agree.I had a 9700pro in which died 3 weeks ago and I just purchased the XFX 5200FX 128mb 128bit memory for a backup card till the NV40/r420 arrive, and yes there is a difference in performance and IQ in Far Cry.The water looks too plain with the 5200 and the card cannot run many new games above 800x600.Hell,it cannot even run the Splinter Cell demo above 20fps at 640x480 with everything set to low.

On the other hand, this 5200 does blow my Radeon 7200 32mb pci card in the water.

Because people are shallow and want to justify thier own purchases by slamming anyone who doesn't buy thier brand of card.

I wasnt flamming nor slamming the original poster.all i was giving out my honest opinion since the 5600ultra and the 5200 are based on the same core.

Because people are shallow and want to justify thier own purchases by slamming anyone who doesn't buy thier brand of card.Excuse me for saying so, but what would you want people to say? This is a forum for discussion. What is everyone supposed to do?

"Hey buddy, nice card...yep...nice card."

Without this sort of banter there wouldn't even any need for nV News or any other discussion forum. No one was being offensive or acting like an idiot. As soon as we start seeing posts like "OMFG teh 5600 sux **** you h4x0r" then things need to be put under control. However as it stands I think you're missing the point of a forum entirely. :|

Anyway, back to the point of this topic. If you're happy with the card, that's all well and good, but I don't think the 5600, 256MB of not, is even close to the level the 9600XT is on. What did you do with your 9600XT? I'll take it. :D

5200 = nv34

5600 = nv31

same core? nope.

5600NU's offer ~GF3 performance all around... so IMO they're not bad, esp if stepping up from a GF2ti/GF4mx/GF2MX etc...

If it palys the games you want it to play, and does so without too many problems, then GREAT!! enjoy it!! (I still love gaming with my GF3 when I use it... well, except in Farcry :p)

NV34 = 5500 FX, but the 5600 is NV31.

But, the 5600 is based off the org. 5800, isn't it, with crippled shaders?
