If this has been mention in another place me sorry. The Inquirer has mention about this, yes I know it isn't a hot site for reliable news so take this as your own judgment..

Nvidia claims the NV40 is 16x1, 32x0

READY TO BE confused about the NV40 and its infamous pipelines again? If so, sit yourself down, bare your left breast, and prepare to be bemused.

Even though we believe what we wrote here about the famous pipelines, it is only fair to give Nvidia's side of the coin.

What Nvidia said more then once to its loyal NDA (non disclosure agreement) press is that its chip uses 16x1, 32x0 approach. This is why all of them have the general feeling that Nvidia will win this round of the graphics wars.

This means that Nvidia can officially claim that its NV40 chip has 16 pipelines that can process one texture per clock which would pretty much mean that it will beat the R420 12x1 design.

Nvidia also claims as much as 32x0, perhaps producing the ability of the NV40 to render pixels without Color or Z value that will be very important in Doom 3 and games that use this engine.

I just cannot figure how you can put 16 real pipelines in a chip that is around 70 per cent bigger than the NV30 which eventually had only 4x2 marchitecture. A 70 per cent larger die implies that you could double your pipeline count but not quad it.

Let's hope that Nvidia's story is the right one but we won't know until someone who has cards plays around and discovers how this thing actually works.

However this turns out, I suggest that fastest card for Doom 3 will be NV40 because of its pipeline number and what Nvidia calls 32x0 and what we call 16x0.

NV30 taught me to be sceptical about Nvidia claims since our developer friends could easily find out how many textures you get each pass, not a hard thing to do.

Time will tell as in less than three weeks NV40 will get its final shape.

lets just wait 3 weeks and find out once for all if nvidia is telling the truth. they said nv30 was 8 real pipes but it was 4x2

I am certainly lloking forward the the release. I have recently been "paid for services" with a new computer (anything I want). So I will be getting the first card that is out NV40 or r420 :jammin:

I have a feeling it will be the NV40. I expect it to be on shelves by late May as I am sure that Nvidia will not repeated their screw up again from the NV30 with a delay of around 2 months.

if your getting paid, ask for cash instead then buy a computer 90% as fast for half the money. If not, get a socket 939 mobo, fx53, as much ram as itll support, perhaps 4GB, r420, dual 200GB hdds, etc ;)

getting cash to build a computer!! :-D

yes getting FX-53, Asus SK8V, 2GB Ram, 2 x 74GB Raptors

do you have to spend all the cash or is the cash only allowed for a computer? otherwise theres alot of other things you can save for ;)

Maybe they scrap 2 of their vertex shaders, because they are not neded to get good benchmarks. I imagine reviewers go something like this, as usual:

"whoa!! 50FPS at 2048x1536 6xAA 16xAF!"

sorry i just want better graphics and maybe texture effects and AA arent everything.

I dunno, I don't think 1 vert shader is powerful enough ( NV30 Had 3 vert shaders right? ).

if nvidia removes vertex shader(s) they will get owned in dx9 games

Just from what Carmack said today I'll buy one.

"I just got an nv40 and put it in my dev machine, and it is spectacular!"

To here him say it it's got to be good.
After all he did not like the NV3x line and
made no bones about it's poor performance.

The NV40 will perform well in DX9 I'm sure.
There is no way in hell nvidia is going to drop
the ball again.
I figure they will retake the top spot.

give him an r420 and he will quickly forget the nv40 ;)

General public hasn't even seen the final cards let alone specs and are making judgements. Lets see the previews come April 13th (NVIDIA) and whatever for ATI (shouldn't be far off NV's launch) before we make such judgements

How do we know previews will come on the 13th? I only know there will be a lan party that date in san franscio

For chrissake man, it would be logical after a launch date that ppl (web editors) will be spalshing the specs and perf detailts from the launch party although the perf details will be from NV. After launch bugger all be left under NDA.

It's called "Geforce" LAN party.

I'm pretty convinced about the launch date.

If you want to know what's going on, it helps to read the entire web page.

Tuesday, April 13th, NVIDIA will be hosting an unprecedented all-day LAN party in conjunction with the introduction of our next-generation GeForce GPU.

Do you really believe a company would launch a brand new flagship yet not have the NDA's expire so people can give specs and the like, even if there aren't any reviews of cards?

Also may i add they are giving away their 'Next gen video cards' to the winners of the LAN? So the 13th is probly the day th NDA is lifted because the cat will be out of the bag. Or i could see the 14th, because the lan will probly end at night, so the winners will only have a few hours jump on the reviewsite. eg midnight

Unless the winners have to sign NDA's to recieve their cards?! ;)

But I doubt it, I reckon NDA will expire 13th too.
