View Full Version : Woot! 5800U arrives!
I just got a PNY 5800 Pro. So far I've noticed:
It's a little slower at UT2004. 10X7 4X8X 60s-70s instead of 70s-80s I got with 9800 Pro.
Not as noisey as I expected.
Noticeably worse at Far Cry, oh well, didn't buy it for DX9 games. :afro:
Just threw it in and changed drivers, no format yet.
BTW-it's as I expected. Without the framecounter on, I wouldn't hae known the difference at UT2004.
Don't buy that hype "ATI AA is superior" BS

Haha, most everyone believe in this hype then.

BeheLIAR, have you actually had both cards? Or are you just yet another "Well I read a review and looked at some magnified still shots" expert? :nono:
Like I said, I've used your card 16/17 months, so I have a pretty good idea how it works. How many months have you used my card that you can make a comment?
Hey I used a 5800 Ultra for 5 months. Trust me, compared to my 9800 Pro.. Hell, it shouldn't even be compared!!
Oh, and FarCry defaults to DX8 mode on that 5800. UT2004 isn't so much graphics intensive as some other games, as it is memory/processor... so it makes sense it runs about the same.

Why should I trust you, when I can look at it my self???
LOL yeah right, "9800 is teh roxor" :spongebob
The differences are small. (pb)

Actually Jakup did have a 5800 Ultra for the longest time. Anyway, Why does it have to be argued? ATi currently has multi sampling AA thats a bit better than Nvidias, Nvidia currently has AF thats a bit better than ATIs *shrug*

Wow.. You sound like me 1 year ago trying to defend that P.O.S. card. Just give up already.
Have fun trying to cram Far Cry and Doom3 down a 128bit memory bandwith.

I really dont think the card is a piece of ****, But compared to a 9800 Pro? Just doesnt have the bandwith or the shader power.
Anyway, You shouldnt be so spiteful jakup, :) you know there are legitimate reasons to prefer one IHV over another :)
Yes, yes I know :) But going from a 5800 Ultra, to a 5900, then a 9800 Pro, I just really cant see going backwards. Yes, I will agree, my NV card had some fine AF. Very nice. Its AA sucked though... anything above 2X looked exactly like 2X.

So far the only benchmarks I've seen show the 5800 Ultra mopping the floor with the 9800Pro at medium quality, and beating the 9800 Pro at high quality.
LOL, all on 128bit memory. How do you think that happened Jakup?
It's interesting how vehemently you defend the 9800 Pro now.
FarCry? Oh well, it plays better on ATI. So far I'm not overly impressed with it.

I use 4x9tap or 4xS, Some games I use 4x, Because on Chars legs theres a big difference, Because the jaggeds are so vertical.
Its dependent on Game.
But IMO quincunx does better job on horizontal edges than 4x :O
The problem with video card forums in general is you get these guys discussing little differences in cards like they actually meant something, like moving from the ghetto to a rich suburb.
Then if you actually take the time to try different cards, you find out you don't even notice the differences in IQ unless you start taking screenshots, and the differences in framerates unless you have the counter on.
Anyway, played some GTA Vice City, again didn't notice the difference.
BTW Jakup, I don't have to "defend" anything. I can use whatever card I want.
I'm liking the 5800 Ultra so far. I suppose if I didn't have a job and had to pick a card for 2004 I'd take the 9800Pro over it, but it's a fun card to play with.
Don't fret- I'll buy a card soon enough that will seem like a big upgrade to you. (kngt)

rollo you have FarCry demo or retail? the 1.1 patch increases fx shader performance up to 2x....

Cant be more true. To say otherwise is :lame:
(I can feel a troll technical lesson on AA is incoming, a lesson like he knows what hes talking about) :lol2:
It's natural to be proud of your new card when you get it, no matter what kind it is, and starting a thread about it?...most of us do. If only he hadnt taken a pot-shot at ATi when he made his original post about how happy he was that his new card had arrived. He set the stage for a flame fest when he did that....
There was no pot-shot. He made an effort to discourage any of the banter that is often thrown @ nv30 owners.
There are reasons to be proud of having (or even chasing after) an nv30. There was a time (a little too late in its career, but at least there was a completely noticeable improvement) when R200 went through the same thing, but things were corrected, and (maybe at a later than planned) the card went through a "this card is a great deal for the money, and offers the performance I'm looking for." period...
Well, the nv30 is also going through that period, and will for the next few months to a year (IMO R8500/9100's are STILL great deals for the money, sittin right between GF3ti and Gf4ti4200)...
...
It's the fastest 128 bit memory interface equipped card that will ever exist. (unless there's some PCX 5700UberU that ekes past it)
It's the first DDR2 equipped card... :drooling:
It overclocks quite nicely.
I do believe that ALL nv30's were built with VERY tight mfg tolerances... Can't say the same about other cards.
...
New drivers have been very kind to nv30. It's still worth a look, and is now positively competitive with 9700NP/9700P/9800NP/FX5900SE in many more aspects than during it's introductory phase...
Rollo, I hope you enjoy the card. I'm planning on trying one out soon as well. :) But first, I'm gonna play with the R9700 @ pro speeds and see how I enjoy it...

Wow... this guy can't be serious... why the hell would you want to downgrade from a 9800 Pro to a complete POS-crap that is the 5800 Ultra? I owned one of these cards before Jakup did... and believe you me, it's a piece of total trash. That was back when I was an Nvidia fan, but after that crap-pile, I've been ATi ever since.
I had that card, and the very next day I sold it to a co-worker, and proceeded to buy a 6-month old (at the time) 9700PRO which comletely demolished the trashy 5800 Ultra.
Sorry dude, but you've been n00b'ed under your own assumptions.
Oh well, if it makes you happy, enjoy that piece of trash, but don't come on here telling us about how it's better than a 9800PRO when in fact it's a total piece of donkeychu compared to it.

wow.. you have some issues you need to deal with heh... :screwy:
btw, he never said it was better than a 9800pro, so you don't have to feel like you holy piece of computer hardware needs to be saved from an attack.
Lostlilchild6, you give ATi fans a bad name...
Didn't you already make a thread about getting a 5800 Ultra? Oh well, your money...(crazy)
No I made a thread about getting a 5800 Deluxe, that turned out to be DOA.
I don't have retail Far Cry Cainam, don't like it enough to get it from what I've seen.
Don't be hatin' ATI Fans!
All I meant by that "Don't buy the ATI AA is "superior" hype" is that while it may be better on ATI as evidenced by pinwheels and magnified stillshots, in actual game play there's not a huge difference that's evident to the naked eye while you run around in the game.
I was trying to say the IQ at the settings I play at seems comparable, that's all.
Man, you guys have some issues. The 5800U is "slow" compared to WHAT? It's basically the same speed as a 9700Pro, and last I checked, that's still a pretty good card.
It's as noisey as a big OCer fan I put on my Athlon XP system, but when the games are playing and you have the sound on, it's not all that noticeable.
I was bored with the 9800 Pro, plain and simple. I had it for 8 months, I had a 9700 Pro for 8 months before that.
I'm going to buy the better of the nV40 vs R420 dual in a few months, so what the heck do you guys care if I play with a 5800 Ultra for a while?
LOL- you'd think I burned down your houses and shot your families as they ran out, rather than trade a video card for another video card.
"Heavens to Betsy! The 5800U! Hide the kids! Kill the monster!" :lame:
