as of recently ive had a few chances to play a few of the latest games. the last two games i bought are unreal tournament 2004 and farcry dvd editions. i only have a geforce4 ti4400 and i usually play most games at 1280x1024. Now on Farcry and UT2004 I dont get too bad of fps with them, however it seems to slow down intensely in certain areas. My main problem is I have a 19" monitor...do a lot of you use a 1024x768 res on a 19" monitor? i dont plan on getting a new video card anytime soon not at least until maybe nv40 rolls around and btw i am not biased i will also check out ati even though ive had bad experiences with them in the past. is my video card really THAT old and slow now?

Yea pretty much :) It is approaching 2 generations old.

I use 1152x864 on my 19 inch monitor. Same aspect ration, but a touch higher rest than 1024x768. If a game is particularly taxing for the vid card I will play at 1024x768. With some AA and AF is looks fine to me.

If you have high GFX settings on, i.e., hi quality textures, AA, AF, etc, you can make 1024x768 look very nice. Either that or 11x8 should be sufficient for now depending on the game. However, you may want to upgrade if you want to have your cake and eat it too, i.e., hi Q, hi res, AA, AF & good framerate.

i appreciate all the input and advice guys thanks, i do not currently use AA or AF very much or often however though because of this card, so im pretty much playing at the given res, no aa or af...but every once in a while doesnt hurt

I don't have a problem running at 1024x768 on my 19" ingame when it's required. It'll definitely give you a few more FPS especially in those games you mentioned.

I was starting to play some games at 1024*768 with my GF3 on my 19" monitor, seems a little different at first, then you adjust to it, and it doesnt seem that bad at all :)

Just remember that all the graphical beauty means squat if your framerate bottoms out, chugs, stutters, or does something to cause you to mess up. Then it doesn't matter how beautiful it looks. :)

I run farcry at 1024x768 all details maxed on my oced ti4200. you can do the same, it looks pretty and runs fast

1024x768 with 6xAA and 4xAF is the way to go :)

1024x768 is the killer res for 4200/4400/5600..
good quality/performance.

Anything over 1024 start to slow a bit..
