Seems kinda worth a news
Worth the news but not really surprising. To become as famous and successful as ATI or nvidia you HAVE to use "questionable" business tactics; it's like with politicians.
The only difference between ATI and nvidia until now has been that ATI could better hide their actions which due to the superior SM 2.0 performance on Radeons did not need to be as "brutal" as nvidia current tactics.
But I seriously do have the feeling that this will change dramatically for ATI if their r420 will perform worse than the nv40. In fact I expect more of these leaks (either ppt leaks or just plain information leaks on ATI's PR section) in the future because now they have to maintain the position they gained during the last 1.5 years... and this could prove to be much harder than becoming the performance leader in the first place (if and only if the nv40 is really that much better than the r420)
On a somewhat different note it's very interesting to see ATI's opinion on next-gen technologies changing now in that ATI was always pushing SM 2.0 to the max but now that they won't have support for SM 3.0 for maybe a full year so they are trying to downplay the importance of SM 3.0 as seen in the powerpoint notes.
The same goes for fanboys of both sides. Fanatics are going to claim that SM 3.0 will be of no importance until 2005 and nvidiots of course are trying to convince the world that SM 3.0 will be the next best thing since slice bread which is the exact contrary of what happend the last 1.5 years.
The truth of course is as always somewhere in the middle... and ATI is wrong in downplaying SM 3.0 but fortunately they haven't gained enough impact on the 3d industry so that they can succeed in their "mission". As most already know the first game offering limited SM 3.0 support is already out (Far Cry) and another one will follow... hl2
SM 3.0 will make a difference by the end of the year in one way or another... you can always bet on nvidia ;)

This powerpoint was (although for a short time) available on ATI's site.

Don't spoil his conspiracy theory, the world will end for him if he finds out ATI may be doing something wrong
Edit: Oh yeah some of the comments must have been edited in, especially those questionable ones ;)

well i know that. The point is i want people realize that Nvidia is not the only "evil" company here but obviously ATI is helping me out a lot.
I would suggest that they keep on going with this kind of crap.
That's the best way going south market share and influence wise.
The best way not getting to arrogant and lazy.

So are you guys saying that ATI is in the same boat as NV with their business ethics? Good greif. This is in no way shape or form as bad as the K2 doc NV did. This is the same thing as David Kurt down playing the existance of a 256 bus back on the nV days or the interviews with NV where they said 16/32 is better than 24 bits. Gosh people...

Nobody has said that, all that has been said is that ATI are not the perfect halo wearing company that folks paint them to be. Of course people seem to object to the truth at times.

Iif you want to believe that ATI is still totally good and wholesome, you go right ahead. :angel2:
What was funny was the references to use PS 1.4, I thought PS 2.0 was everything?! ;)
Finally ppl get to see that ATI is no different to NV.
PS. 1000 posts!!!

Everyone knows (minus a few fanboys) that ATI isn't perfect...but they are a hell of a lot better than NV. And I think the big thing that has been missed not only in this thread but also the one over at B3D is the presentation that it was used in. Whether there are notes or not isn't really important other than giving us some new info. What is important is how the presentation was made. From what I heard of the presentation 95% of those notes were never used in the actual presentation and the presentation was fairly neutral. I think all of us that have prepared documents before have put little placeholders or reminders in about something. Sometimes they can be sarcastic or more serious than what will actually take its place in the final presentation or report, or ever vulgar.
I think most of us would agree that we don't always mean these things for the final copy but for us personally. No one was intended to see this other than Richard Huddy and I find it shocking how seriously some of you guys take it. If there is a comment that is anti-NV in the notes...but that comment never makes it into the actual presentation does that reflect badly on a company? I don't think it does if that comment was made by one person for only that one person and could have only been in that tone due to circumstances at that time (bad day etc.).

Both CEO's of both corporations have been investigated one time or another by a regulatory body, so neither companies had angel halos to begin with. The CEO is the company since the company follows his vision.

Wow, slide 31 is a kicker! (pb
So those notes were for the speaker only.
I also belive the comments about 500mhz being a very fast vpu means that ATi will probly reach that speed, but not much more.
Also, it could mean that they feel nv40 will be faster than 500mhz while ati is at 500mhz.

I find it hard to believe ATi would publish something with an obvious typo on the first page.
"Tobe"
But hey, whatever makes you feel better.
Yes, I feel much better knowing they make typos also. :)

I don't even know where to begin. :surrender
A company's internal presentations usually don't have a good level of polish to them... they're usually finished on a hangover day... :p

It came directly from ATIs Site.
why do parts of it look really familiar? Haven't I seen certain pages of that in some other presentation from sometime in the past few months??

That's what I thought with the last leaked presentation but it turned out to be real.
What I want to know is what genius decided to post it on the ATI website in the first place.

Id also like to make a note of Page 38, the note below the slide says
Mention that you expect to see a 512MB board in the consumer space this year. Don't say that it'll be R420 based!
Im excited about this, for anyone who though 256mb was insane (also me) 512mb is just sweet hehe.
Sure, its probly more of a 'Hey look what we can do' but ill be first in line to buy it : D
