View Full Version : Opteron 146 (socket 940) + registered DDR = great gaming platform?
A buddy of mine was gonna go the AMD64 route, and WILL be purchasing a LOT of stuff in the next couple days... he's currently drooling over the prospect of dual channel + 64 bit performance...
He's primarilly a gamer, but dabbles in server environment specific applications as well...
He was all for socket 754 until he found out that it's single channel...
And NO he's not waiting for nv40 or waiting for the PCX line of cards...
What do you guys think about an Opteron 146 rig as a gaming platform?
btw he'll be using a radeon 9800pro or a 5900XT as a vidcard...

yes, and i do admit to being his friend and in need of professional opinions, im goig to keep researching (mag) :super:
its not a bad system :)
costs are a little higher though...
also keep in mind the dual channel/single channel differences are not great in most cases.. just depends what you are looking to be doing with the system...
An Opteron is a Athlon FX just dirrent name also tell him to look out for the new core revision as it's a better overclocker and has better memory controller peformance too.

cool, thanks Dazz, the more info i can get the better cause im going to buy everything tonight (salute)
the cg core revision is what he's talk about...
CG stepping which is tweaked...to be more compatible with different variety of memory modules?
yes muya... effectively...
the enchaned HT and what not will come @ a later date...
Well, the purchase shall take place tonite...
any links on where to get the cg stepping?
oh and btw, thanks you guys for helping eating The Holy out... :)
the new cpu's should all be Cg stepping... not sure if retaillers have them listed as such...
It should perform much like a S754 3200+. Maybe a little better in content creation.
A great CPU, but probably not as cost effective for gaming as a 3200+... still very good.

Heh, well, I ordered everything tonite.. I'm posting the txt file of the order for ragejg, who helped source all this shizzle with me (till 1am)...
Oh happy day :p
:firedevil Thanks for the help, folks!! :firedevil
Merry freakin Christmas, Greg...
I can't wait to piece this thing together next week!!!
btw, the mem is corsair XMS registered 2x512, and the vidcard is a gainward golden sample 5900XT... the default clocks are bumped up a little... YeeeHaw!!!
I'll be so drooling in a few days...
I THINK this will play the new medal of honor game just fine, d00d... :p

:POKE: i SURE HOPE SO bunghole :POKE:
hehe
(omg)
no offense but there are a few things (read several) I woulda done different...
ah well still a nice system... enjoy and keep us posted...
/me makes note in memory not to let ragejg help him decide his computer upgrades...
wow opterons? athlonFX would have done good..maybe even athlon64 s754 according to performance numbers unless u are going to run servers ;)
but anyway...nice setup and enjoy!
He can upgrade to an AFX later, the opteron 146 is only 2.0GHZ costs a bit less than the 2.2GHz FX-51. Still, besides that the FX's have unlocked multipliers, which makes overclocking much easier on boards with no AGP/PCI lock (All current S940 boards apparently).

i gotta know, where do all of you guys learn all of this stuff from?
reading... personal experience... the internet... school of hard knocks
you name it... been there/dun that :D
I was just a little miffed coz I had a different impression of what you were getting and the system I checked out is sorta fast here/slow there/decent here/not so decent there...
generally you try and balance it as best as you can and if things are not in your budget you skimp on one thing in order to raise budget for something else..
out of curiosity what are you going to be running on this system...

...
Sazar, this was sorta an "I just got A LOT of money, now I wanna spend it on a crazy expensive rig" situation... and he REALLY wanted to go dual channel... oh and also: he won't be overclocking this rig... stock speeds on this rig UNTIL he upgrades later to an A64 FX (prolly like 2 months after nv40 release)...
However, he wanted to get teh "not really the most expensive" cpu, and a vidcard that would be a good holdover until nv40...
Some of these component purchase decisions were almost over-lavish, however... again this was due to the large amount of cash available...
So what exactly looks like a dumb purchase to you, Sazar?
Sazar, here's my lil' excerpt from the irc channel this morning as well.... you fool.
<ragejg> dam j00 all...
<ragejg> i only got a minit
<ragejg> Eating the holy has a 120gb sittin around
<ragejg> plus he borrowed my nv35
<ragejg> and he likes it
<ragejg> so he's gettin one
<ragejg> and he wanted dual channel
<ragejg> but doesnt wanna OC yet
<ragejg> teh 2x36gb is for XP to boot off... SATA RAID
<ragejg> there is logic in teh purchase decisions, you infidels!
<ragejg> :p
<ragejg> he'll be going A64 FX/nv40 later
* ragejg kicks everyone in the nuts
* ragejg slaps everyone with a dead smelly pike
:p
