View Full Version : Suggestions for best video card in a P3 1.4Ghz system?
My dad has a P3 1.4Ghz, 576 RAM @ 156FSB (overclocked), Asus TUV4X MB w/ 4X max AGP running XP Pro. Not bad, but not the best either. I am getting him a new video card for his B-day, hoping he can play games other than Hereos 2 :) but I know that the newest VC's are out of his system's league (9800XT, etc). Do you guys have any suggestions for the best video card is that his comp can handle?
hmmm, methinks a 9700 would do nicely on that... I don't know how a 5900 would do, but I'm sure it wouldnt perform too badly...
yeh, that is a pretty stong setup you gots there for a P3... :)
It fits well into the (1.3 to 2 ghz) area... and they do benifit from cards with 256 bit memory bandwidth...
So, slap down $160-$190 for one of those...
If thats too much, think 5700 ultra for around 150, 5700 non ultra for around 110, and 5600 ultra for around 100...
All of those cards would perform great in that setup...
...heh, 156fsb, NICE!! :D (seriosly, for a P3, that's nice :) )

What video card do you got right now ,maybe a cpu mobo upgrade would be more usefull , if not try getting new 5700 Ultra with DDR-3 :D should not be expensive and overcloack nicely , not sure if its out yet though.
He's got a Geforce 4 MX440.

Uh its like Geforce 2 class card , definetly get something more advanced if you have arround 200$ try getting highest model for arround that mutch
9800/9700 ->nv 5900 ->nv 5700 ->ati 9600Pro ( don't go lower )
pro or ultra preferable ;)
here is good baseline i would say , alot of games are based on Unreal level engine.
I have a feeling that a 9800 Pro would give too much bandwidth / data rate for a AGP4X to handle. You guys happen to know the highest card that maxes out the AGP4X spec? I seem to be leaning to a 9700pro though. ;)
Don't worry about the AGP spec, that's really trivial...
---EDITED BLABBER--- ...I had my facts a little mixed up. :p
;) I have a nice 9700 that I might be able to hook you up with <<for a nice price>>, if that's teh way you wanna go... ;)
A Geforce FX 5900XT would be a nice video card although you won't get everything out of it but they are still as cheap as an 5700Ultra :)
Also you are wrong a video cards fillrate is 100% on the card, increasing the rez will have a great impact on a slow CPU while FSAA + AF is 100% on the video card so will run as fast as the CPU can go upto a point when the video card becomes the bottle neck. Rez is straining both video card and CPU.
Dazz is right, but he had a typo.
Resolution is hard on the cpu, but AF&AA aren't.
