It turns out the NV40 is nothing but a 4x4 configuration after all (four pipelines with four texture units per pipe). :( It can process 16 pixels per clock under certain (rare) situations. Read about it yourself on nVidia's website:
http://download.nvidia.com/developer/presentations/GDC_2004/GDC_2004_CinematicEffectsII.pdf

It starts around page 14.

EDIT: Fixed dead link. Oops.

Thought that filename seemed kinda wierd, Of course I was pretty sure it was an Aprils Fools joke to begin with.

Huh? That gets me a document on the transition to AGP 8x (7 pages long), which (guessing by the filename) was put there on 23rd September 2002.

/me searches around for the "this is going wwaaayyyy over my head" emoticon

The link to beyond3d is to drivers and the other to futuremark warblings about performance quoted from a source quoting beyond3d.

Chrisw please change you tag line to

PS You can remove that " I was wrong " you were, but I have forgiven you ... BIG KISS
