I guess they realize the FX prefix left a sour taste and was assosicated with crap performance.

A good move in my opinion. I don't go as far as saying crap performance but I do think out with the old in with the new.
Fantastic performance, no need for optimised drivers, great IQ, Doom III voucher, massively overclockable, DigitalWanderer, Doomtrooper and Hellbinder all buying one ( Hellbinder actually buying two as it's so good he's Luvin it )
Oh yeah, baby .. summer of joy here we come.*

Andy
* Subject to me being right, always read the smallprint, benchmark figures can go down as well as up.

before any of you buy one, wait till both come out and theres many websites and reviews, also wait for someone else to be the first pioneer. I hope nvidia cuts down on the optimizations too
I dun think modern GPUs/next gen GPUS will be massively overclockable..not with their transistor count by which they will be pushing the thermal limits already. ;)

with your watercooling setup, you laugh at silly thermal limits as you push the 9900xt from 600/1100 to 850/1250 :lol2: :kill: (foshiz) :balloon: :rofl
The GeForce 6 series will pull even more cards under this flag but it seems that all the other cards will be PCI Express. Nvidia will still have to introduce NV45, NV43 and NV41 PCI Express parts and I guess there will be some 6XXX name slots reserved for those cards as well
ummm... are they saying there wont be a GF6 AGP version at all now?! WTF :retard:
I'm not sure if I'm reading that right, but if I am then Nvidia are out of their minds. It's gonna take a couple years before everyone converts to PCI-E. Furthermore people have bought Athlon64 setups that are very fast and well made, you can't expect them to trash those motherboard over the GF6. Hell it might actually increase R9800Pro sales if they do that. And if ATI comes out with a R4xx with AGP it'll blow away Nvidia in sales.
What really pisses me off about this is the stupidity of PCI-E. Why is everyone jumping on it when as it is the bandwidth provided by AGP8x is still hardly used. :screwy:

You do realize that the chips are designed for either AGP or PCI-E, correct? In case you haven't heard, Nvidia's solution to this problem is for board makers to use a bridge chip that allows chips designed for PCI-E to use the AGP bus and for chips designed for AGP to use the PCI-E bus.

Well true, I meant for normal air cooling. I managed 11C on my 5700U with just slightly chilled water, but for next generation it will be properly chilled, ie <-20C water mixture .
Unless r420 is a lot faster I will be going nv40 as I just like nvidia better. Though if it is a turkey ( which I don't believe) then I will move over.

does IQ play any factor? Nvidia will fallback on their "cheatnators" if the gf 6800 is slower than the 9900xt. besides, does it matter when both cards give over 100fps, youd want IQ then

Yes over 100fps ( or even +60fps to be honest ) and IQ is importatant. I am not too concerneed about quality of AA , though it would be nice, but I don;t want to lose any PS2 effects etc that you get at present with some games.
I'm fairly confident nv40 and r420 will both be pretty equal on speed and IQ, well enough for me not have to have one over the other and can take my pick. nvidia is like an old pair of slippers though.

nvidia were champs till the 9700 pro came up and they are still behind to this day. their geforce2 owned the radeon, their geforce3 owned the 8500 and their ti4200 was untouchable. then the 9700 came and ate the ti4600. nvidia answered with the fx5800u that still got owned by the 9700. Nvidia now pretends they never had the fx5800, you dont see anymore of those anywhere but tons of fx5600s, fx5700s and especially fx5900s. I do hope the gf 6800 will be good just so I can see more competition and that 40k score ;)

At the moment, ATi will have the superior IQ, certainly with regard to AA (not the method used, just the number of samples). Not sure if it's a hardware or software limitation on NV4x though.
I hope nvidia cuts down on the optimizations tooWhat do you mean exactly by optimizations? Anyone that has ever written a lick of code knows that optimazations are a good thing, they are desirable, any code should go through various iterations of refactoring and optimizing. I say bring on the optimizations. :headbang:
Oh I know what you're getting at...it just always tickles me when people use optimizations like it is a bad word. :banghead: :canadian:

Nvidia will be launching the NV40 in just over a week. The word is that the NV40 will not use the FX name like the current GPU. Instead, Nvidia will use a 4 digit number beginning with a "6" to indicate the 6th generation of GPU. This one will be a tremendous leap over the current 5th generation. How much of a leap remains to be seen, but rumors persist of scores exceeding 10,000 3DMarks in 3DMark 2003. Most of today's systems are hard pressed to break 7000. :kill:
It would make perfect sense for them to drop the Fx from the name as they are not 3DFx. The whole reason for them using it the last time was to capitalize in the rumors the NV30 was going to contain "3DFx Rampage technology". Of course, the rumors were wrong and 3DFx is dead and burried now so I feel they want to just forget about them.
