Ok I need some help

Installed Mandrake 9.0
Finally an installation I can recommend to linux newbies, by far the most trouble free yet. (I know I know, theres probably 101 arguments + against that)

However, when you want to play around and say....get GL stuff running on ya GF2mx (I am a poor man) thats where the wall comes in.
On my Suse7.3 install the drivers were no problem, however there are only 8.2 for Mandrake.

errors for installing from RPM's are:
modprobe cant locate module NVdriver

and on GLX install:
libGL.so.1.0.3123 possible conflict with mesa rpm

Please help, I would like to do this the easy way in order to create an installation guide for friends etc.

As stated in the README, you can't use drivers intended for a previous version of a distribution. Because precompiled binary RPMs aren't yet available for Mandrake 9.0, you'll need to rebuild either the SRPM or source tarball packages. Instructions for building and installing from SRPM or source can be found in the README.

Please note you'll need to have the kernel-source package installed to rebuild the driver.

I went with the 2960 driver due to other posts regarding problems with the latest release.

I can always upgrade
Anyway after finding my mistake (typing Make all instead of just MAKE for the GLX tarball) I now have a wonderful hardware enabled desktop.

oh yes on another note, I always recommend installing kernel source/headers etc, you never know when you need to compile/recompile.

When I do upgrade to the next version, is it necessary to remove the old driver?

Generally not - RPM will upgrade itself, and the tarballs will simply overwrite older drivers. You will need to be out of X (in runlevel 3), and have rmmod'ed NVdriver, though.

It seems that graphics drivers still require more work than RPM's can handle.
however the tarballs were surprisingly easy to use.

Being an HPUX sysadmin, I am more used to using swinstall, which I beleive RPM is an equivalent of.

back to the driver, I will need to upgrade as 2960 froze during testing, using armagetron.
