I confess I don't totally understand what this requirement for two molex connectors really means. First of all, I don't know how many rails my power supply has or even what a rail is in the first place. So I have no idea if the two molex requirement would really be a problem.

An explanation of what a "rail" represents would be nice if someone wanted to take the time. Guess I could always go looking for a power supply faq or something..

Looks like you may have the bare minimum for the 6800 ultra.

"Today we can confirm that Nvidia recommends that the PSU for GeForce 6800 Ultra should be no less than a stonking 480W! "

Wow, 480w... Guess anyone w/a Dell can forget about that card.

Using Y adapters isn't a problem, if you're just powering a bunch of fans. You can run as many fans as you would ever want off of one line.

The 480w PS requirement will be a bigger problem. That's still not common. But then again, among people who would buy a 6800 Ultra, it probably is common.

I want a insanely fast system, but it has to run off a AA Battery... :retard:

There's no way in hell a video card should use or need a 480 watt p/s. I can understand that nVidia want back on top, but come on.

Next thing you know you'll have to plug your computer into 220v outlet.

People should realize that what nvidia (or ati) recommends for the psu is just that, a recommendation. ATI recommends a 300W psu for a Radeon 9800 Pro, yet Dell has a 9800 Pro as an upgrade for a system that only has a 250W psu.

Anyway, I just have to laugh when people say "the next chip from company z is going to suck! Just look at all the rumors, um, i mean facts. Rumors can never be wrong!! Not when they come from the totally reliable people at the inq and mpc!"

Ahh, now there's some good old common sense...man I miss that around here at times like this. :) Nice post.

I don't get it. If you're going for the latest/fastest/most expensive card available on the market, the rest of your system should be on a par (including the often neglected PSU) anyway. I'd take it for granted that people interested in buying the latest cards should have a top end CPU, RAM, etc. Why have a crappy PSU in it? Although i too don't like (nor do i believe these rumours yet) what i've heard lately, i don't think it's such a big deal. Plus if you got the money to spend for such a card, then you got the money to buy a top PSU as well, which you should probably have done in the first place anyway...

A few weeks ago, when it seemed like the rumored specs for both cards were changing on a daily basis, I basically gave up trying to figure out what/who to believe and what/who not to believe.

Watching the people bicker over whether a 12 pipe card can beat a 16 pipe card, or how two 16 pipe cards compare, or the other 20 combinations that have been thrown about, can actually be entertaining, but for the most part, it's pointless.

NV40 cards could require a 400+ watt psu, or 300 may be enough. . To me, right now, it doesn't matter who it is that posts information about NV40 or R420, no matter how reliable they have been in the past, I'm not going to believe it. And unless someone is going to send me a card so I can see for myself what's true or not (I'll take either NV40 or R420, doesn't matter :) ), I'm waiting until NDA's are lifted and (p)reviews with real information are available.

I believe Mike mentioned in another thread that it has been working fine so far with a 430W Antec power supply. It seems like he's talking about the nv40.

I swap cards quite a lot and sometimes forget to put the Molex back in, but the 5700U without the molex can still hit high overclocks even with the power just going through the AGP slot, ie greater than 550Mhz. Obviously the nv40 will need the power but I think that unless you are planning on massively overclocking it you don't need a superduper PSU with two cables dedicated to nv40. We shall see though, might be completely wrong on this.

Nobody should be spending $10 on a psu though, think what sort of crap goes into that as everyone along the line still has to make a profit.

I quite like AOPEN psu supplies acutally if I am not buying Antec. You get good quality without paying for the name.

Andy

maybe you could get away with just plugging in one of the two molex connectors if you dont overclock the nv40?

:retard: THAT'S IT!!!!!!!!!!11! You figured it out! They'll never know only one molex is plugged in!!! And if you have a cheap power supply, just plug everything half way, that way it won't put as much strain, and it'll only use 1/2 the power!!! :retard:
