ATI Boosts RADEON X800 Specifications

ATI's R420 Increases Number of Pipelines

Only weeks before the release, ATI Technologies decided to boost performance of its next-generation code-named R420 processor by increasing the number of pixel pipelines inside the chip. Industry source told X-bit labs that the story is not about redesign, but about enabling “big guns” that were “hidden” inside the chip from the very beginning.

THIS was taken directly from x-bit labs.
RIGHT HERE (http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/video/display/20040408100025.html) is a link to the entire article

things are getting pretty interesting.
ATI be damned if they get cold feet and go conservative on memory and core speeds.

ATI Pipelines:
Rumors are flying, but here is a bit of fact for you. ATI's next-gen part, codenamed "R420," will in fact be a full 16 pipeline VPU. You can take that to the bank, put it in your pipe and smoke it, or do whatever you want to do with it.

Reliable industry sources relatively close to ATI, told french website Clubic.com, ATI is going to have a sixteen pixel pipelines part starting this spring. Being part of the R420 familly this part is supposed to be a R420 and will likely be available in AGP 8x & PCI-Express 16x flavors.

Wooohooo. If true, that's very interesting news. :)

NU nog hopen dat de R42x en de Nv40 ergens in mei verkrijgbaar zijn... Zal wel july/aug worden :(

this is an interesting "twist" if you will...

so other than ps3.0 this implies that the playing field will indeed be rather level it would seem

woohooo...

hooray for competition...

If both NV40 and R420 had same number or pipes or err does same amount of Quads per cycle then its Megaherz War !!!! :D

Which, based on rumors and low-K, Ati seems to win with their X800XT model.

isn't the nv40 debuting using soi ?

True, ATI seems to get more work per clock cycle than NVidia anyway. If the both the NV40/R420 have 16 pipes and are in 25MHz of one another, I look for ATI to come out on top, albeit not by much though.

Not that I have read... And what about the dual molex rumor...

I thought they were using soi...

the dual molex has to do with power consumption... I don't think you can extrapolate clock speed from the number of molex or floppy connectors a card has... ie XGI has 2...

this was true of the last gen... if as much of the r420 is based off the r3xx as is implied it may well be the case again...

Less power consuption is less heat...
Lower heat is higher possible higher clock speed?
Or normal cooling instead of dustbuster

It's not if, it's using 16 pipes. Now it's going to be interesting to see how the NV40/R420 compete :)

ok I see what yer saying...

the ati card is supposedly running @ higher clocks and I have not eard of any dual molex implementation for it yet... we shall see I spose...

Yup we'll see. Quietly I was planning on the NV40 (please don't tell this to NforceMan :)). But now I am unsure. It seems a tight race. If the R42x delivers what the rumors indicate and the cat's prove stable I am inclined to go for the R42x.

Sounds intresting, but i dont belive it, but if it is ture, it dose confrim their plan of releaseing r420, then rereleaseing it again to make more profit.

Counting the number of typo's you seem to be in a hurry :)

Re-releasing and than re-releasing it again? Please extend

The article makes it sound like ATi was going to

Sell a card with 12pipes, then downt he road sell the same chip with 16pipes, but now seem to of just opted for 'balls to wall' preformance and skip the 12pipes.

But as for me i have a really bad flu and it hurts to look at the monitor.
