View Full Version : UT2K4 = RAM hungry! numbers inside
Total Ram = 1023
before launching UT2K4
RAM USED = 249
Virtual = 146
UT2K4, ONS-Arctic, 1024x768, normal details, low phsyics
RAM USED = 868
Virtual = 646
UT2K4 TOTALS
RAM = 619
Virtual = 500
Total memory use = 1119 (1.1gigs)
All I can say is WOW! I've never had a game this RAM intensive. Now before you starting telling me to turn down some details, lemmy explain that I don't want to. As it is I have no AA/AF, and turning down the details any further would only lessen my gaming experience. Additionally I should mention I set the game cache = 128mb to help load maps a little faster. I didn't post these numbers asking for help, just as an informational thing for everyone. If you don't have at least 1gig already, I strongly recommend you upgrade for these new games! I'm not using high quality settings, and yet look at that memory useage! :eek:
WOW!! Over 1 GIG!! Now your making me wanna upgrade to 2 gigs!!

ya man! I wish I had 4 slots, but alas I have 3 and if I wanna keep my dual channel configuration I'd need to buy a 1gig Crucial PC3200 stick to match. That's over 300bucks! bleh

UT2003 was a frickin hog as well.
Ok, new results:
UT2K4, ONS-Arctic, 1024x768, normal details, low phsyics
RAM USED = 500 (868 before tweaks)
Virtual = 520 (646 before tweaks)
UT2K4 TOTALS (after tweaks)
RAM = 351
Virtual = 374
Total memory use = 725
and I used the following settings:
Disable Shadows
Disable Mouse Smoothing
Enable Reduce Mouse Lag
Disable Joystick
Disable All Touchsense Force Feedback Options
Disable Network Track Stats
Disable Speech Recognition
Disable Preload of Player Skins
Disable Message Beep
Enable Mature Taunt
Disable Auto Taunt
Disable All Text To Speech Options
Disable Play Voices All - Set to None
Enable System Driver (disabled gave me no sound)
Disable Low Sound Detail
Enable Audio Safe Mode
Memory use cut by 35%
EDIT: sorry, i made a math error earlier

As i go buy more ram!
I made a math errors earlier, sorry about that... but I got some more numbers now!!!
I just set the game cache from 128megs to 64megs, seems to be loading maps just as fast
UT2K4, ONS-Arctic, 1024x768, normal details, low phsyics
RAM USED = 500 (868 before tweaks)
Virtual = 437 (646 before tweaks)
UT2K4 TOTALS (after tweaks)
RAM = 351
Virtual = 253
Total memory use = 604
total savings from original = 515mb or 54% :)
For UT2004, unless you have >512mb you have to be careful with a) texture sizes for characters and terrain and b) preloading too much.
I played a BattleField Vietnam mission today and got plenty of 'pauses' during play as I moved around the map, when I exited the game I checked out peak memory usage and it was at 1.2gb. Totaly insane. PC game developers need to stop being lazy and manage resources better.
The fact that pauses were occasional, and if the game *really* used 1.2gb or even more than about 256mb with any level of random access performance would die, shows that there was no need to use that much memory in the first place, forcing windows to shuffle it around.
I also played UT2004 on my old Duron machine with 256mb PC133 and it was fine. Ocasionally dipped below 15fps but mostly stayed above in the 20-30fps range with Geforce3. All settings to low of course. Won a couple of games of Onslaught just to see how it would handle.

1.2gb does seem a bit much.
Jeez, and I thought the Doom 3 alpha was a memory monster. Is it just me, or are developers getting lazier and lazier with RAM usage? Granted, UT2004 is a big game, but compared to the Xbox game Unreal Championship 2, which is limited to 64 megs of ram TOTAL, it seems like PC developers simply assume you have hundreds of dollers to spend on RAM alone. Even Planetside didn't use over a gig of ram (though it came pretty close!).
hey im happy
I got 512mb of Pc133 and playing UT2004 in lowest possible graphics just fine :kill:, I wish i were that green smile face!

All these numbers, yet no FPS numbers.
These RAM issues don't effect average FPS, they cause sudden stalls. In Battlefield Vietnam for instance the game runs at 50-150fps (frame counter bounces wildly) but the game will pause for up to 4 seconds (almost an eternity), though mostly for 0.5 to 2 seconds while memory gets paged in and out for the current game location. UT2004 with preloaded skins and high (or greater) texture behaves the same way as well as having load times of up to 1:30m on my machine (almost enough to miss the first round, or lose the game at times).

The point here is that the game should never have to hit the page file in the first place. It's the game developers writing crappy code.
But you're a Linux user so if you think there's an opportunity to take a dig at Microsoft you're going to do it. Guess I shouldn't expect anything less. :angel2:
