The clockspeeds of the 6800 ultra may not be final

Its rumored that by the time it goes retail clockspeeds may be 500/1.2ghz or even 1.6ghz since samsung already has 800mhz DDR3 chips.

I can tell you this they are pretty much final and don't expect them to run at 500MHz without water cooling current samples top out around 450MHz.

GeForce 6800 Ultra samples at GDC (I think) were running at 475MHz and were artifacting.

so we'll have to wait for the ultra ultra version to get a higher core speed.

If they bump up the voltage slightly and boost the hsf they may be able to hit 500. 0.2v should do it.

Hey, motherboard manufacturers even let the end user do this, video card manufacturers are lagging behind !

I am wondering why they didnt do a preview of the 12 pipe 6800np. Are they waiting to see how the 12 pipe x800Pro compares with the 6800U before releasing it? Kind of like if the x800 is say 20% slower or so then pushing up clockspeed just enough to make is a better bang for the buck, or if it is comparable to the ultra then dropping speeds a bit to increase yields and setting the price lower to be a better bang for the buck vs the x800SE.

I think the current speeds are final.

Let's hope there is a 6850 with higher clock speeds before the 110nm NV45. But who really knows what the NV45 will be anymore ;\ It could just be a PCI-E only NV40 with a slightly faster core and 600MHz GDDR3, maybe overclocked 50MHz like they have done with the 500MHz.. it all depends on competition from ATi i suppose.

Yeap we will ONLY see a speed bump increase in the next type cards aka NV45.

the 400MHz core is final, but the pci-e samples may be clocked higher, the agp ones wont at this point. however we may see 1.2GHz ram on all 6800u's can anyone confirm this?

Yeap there will be an other version later on with higher specs and 512MB RAM.

Anyone here going to bother waiting for that later verison w/the 512 meg?

Well it won't be out till summer.

The only reason I would wait for it is if it dropped the price of the 256 parts but I think there going to sell it for $599 right off the bat. I dont think anyone will need that much ram but if it does come in at $499 it will be tempting even though it will provide no meaningful gains.

And then we would have the 5800 ultra all over again.

Don't think so, they'll probably replace the dustbuster cooling with LN2, who play more than 15 minutes anyway?

I was reffering to fact that they boosted the volts and cranked the clocks in order to stay competitive with the 5800 ultra. This in turn led to poor yeilds and a hot and noisy card.

maybe the refresh will have higher clocks and lower volts because nvidia would have time for a respin or two to boost their yields?

I dunno. The way I see it they

A. Know r420's specs and are confident enough to keep their clocks this low.

or

B. They are saving some room for a refresh to take on x800 xt

or

C. They have no room left with this core on this process(In which case they could be in big trouble)

or

D. Nvidia pulled a fast one and the cards clocks are actually 475 core, like was originally rumored and the samples they sent out are actually 6800 non-ultra's

Who knows? It's going to be a damn good show though (popcorn).
