Before you go to shopping?
NV40 is major kick ass now, but!!!!
New 16 pipes beast clocked ~550/~550 Mhz is coming out...
im gonna wait, definetly
ati isnt going to roll over and die
i agree.. would be silly to make a decision based on only half the facts....
one thing tho.. higher clock speeds does not necessarily equate to higher performance when comparing between 2 different architectures.. if that were the case, the 5800u would be king :P
I am not, or else I would be waiting forever.
6800 ultra hits, then the ati hits, then the 6850 ultra will come out of nowhere , then ati will hit with something else.
It never ends and honestly it gets really asinine.
So I will pick up the 6800 ultra, evga unless another version has a major boost so that I can use the upgrade program if anything gets fed to use near after.

These fanboys, Ill laugh my arse off if Ati ends up smoking nv40 like they smoked the nv30
It's not like i can run out and get me a 6800U today i guess. Or next week..or the week after that. So you know what? I'll wait. (crazy)
I'm still in shock after reading all the 6800 Ultra reviews though. I actually didn't think it would be so damn fast, but i'm wrong about most things. :p
X800 vs 6800.. :drooling:

I'm waiting to see how both cards fare against one another, only then will I spend my $$ on the card I feel best suites my needs.

Everyone see how the 6800U has brought out the fanATIc/NVIDIOT?

Yes but keep in mind the trend has been that ATi is generally more effecient clock for clock so if its got a 600 mhz core and 16 pipes..well it should be an interesting contest to say the least :)
Also, I know some will take this as a fanboy rant but I'm being completely candid here, I have a 430w antec and if the 6800u requires I spend another $100+ on a 480w psu just to run it, I will definitely take that into account when making a decision on what card to buy - thats assuming ATi's card doesn't require something along the same lines which I hope it doesn't. $500 for a new card is already hard enough to swallow, $100+ more for a new PSU is well...nuts.
Only a fool or a fanboy would not wait to see what ATI is offering this round. heh, guess they are pretty much the same thing though. :)
I was actually hoping to see a few more reviews that show how well the video card power scales across different processors. It could well be that the new cards are overkill for all but the fastest processors with most games now being CPU limited.
Guess I'll have to wait for some more indepth reviews of actually shipping cards for that.
Even if it "smokes it" as you say I won't really care because it is a world of difference over the 5200 that I am using now.
I have been with Nvidia since Voodoo went down, have never had hardware issues, driver issues, or compatability issues so why change.

I'm waiting for AMD 939 chipset A64's (San Diego most likely) and PCI-Express. Once those are on the market, I'll pick which one is best at that time.

lol.. we're talking waiting 1-2 weeks, not 6 mo :)

NV40 seems clock for clock allot faster than the last fx generation. 400mhz and beating by 200% a faster(mhz) geforefx. So to me the clock for clock migth be mute piont. Another thing is that this is a new architecture with beta drivers and NV can only get allot faster. On the other hand it looks that NV will hae better tech also with p.s.3 support and Mpeg4 encoding decoding done on hardwear.
ATI is basiclly comming out with a r300 upgrade on .13 prossece with 16pipes. Judgng fron the mhz scability of the 9600 i do think the r420 will be 600mhz card the ddr3 800mhz memoy still look to fast compare to the 550(OC) NV could find. And tech wise i think ATI will improve on there AA AF but will not have the hardwear encoding/decoding NV has.
Still performance wise ATI could beat NV so buyers will have to chosse from a more tech MAYBE less powerfull NV40 or a more powerfull MAYBE less tech ATI card. And is the are close and both use two molex connectors V MIGTH look like the better buy and if you factor in that ATI drivers will be really mature since this is a r3xx familly part then N40 will look like willget allot better than ATI hardwear with new drivers.

PS/VS 3.0 right now to me and I'm sure many others is meaningless until there's a large amount of games out there using it. Hell I'd love to see PS 2.0 fully utilized which hasn't been the case at all. As for hardware MPEG4 encoding/decoding, I believe Radeons have had this ability for a long time if I'm not mistaken. Not sure where you're getting the R420 being a R3xx part from unless you have insider info. that the rest of us lack?

You're wrong r3xx has already hardware encoding/decoding...
Remember that NV40 now can do all shadermark test, because now they have support things which were supported by r300 chip a long time ago.

ATI does not have hardwear encoding/decoding and yes r420 is a r3xx part.

i don't believe r3xx has mpeg, divx etc. hardware encoding/decoding... also keep in min with nv40 it's completely programmable.
and i'm not sure what the shadermark tests has to do with whether hardware encoding/decoding is supported or not.. enlighten me?

Actually they do have it...but much like the NV40 a program needs to be specifically written to take advantage of the encoding features. I see this as a potential downfall for the NV40. If you can't get people to use it or make it easy enough to use so that people want to use it then it is a useless feature. I get the feeling though that NV will suceed with the encoding.

I'm just suprised at how fast the NV40 FP32 renderer is.
definetly waiting longer... first of all the GF6 prices are gonna be too high for my taste, second I wanna see what ATI has to offer for the midrange market, and third I don't like the dual molex design so I'm hoping ATI won't use that.

As far as I know they only announced hardware MPEG2 encoding...but you need to keep this in mind. At the time the announcement was made MPEG4 was still relatively low key compared to the prevalence of MPEG2 and DVDs. Encoding MPEG2 is similar to MPEG4 on a basic level. The base mathematical transform is the same. ATI can use the same unit to encode both. Their downfall was with regards to software. If I recall correctly only their MMC software could use the feature. I believe they were also going to add MPEG4 support but somewhere along the line it got dropped. I could be wrong on some points as I don't own an AIW but this is what I recall reading.

Man.. I can't wait.. if ATI doesn't release some info soon I'm buying a 6800u better or worse.. ATi.. move your butt.. release 64bit drivers if you want some of that 800 I have stashed away (from the wife ;)) for PC stuff..
