Warning may require 1 kilo watt power supply. :lol2:
I think these PSU rumours are getting out of hand. NV recomended a 480W PSU so that even the crappest of makes PSU would have enough power.
If you look at the power consumption listed by some review sites, you'll find that in 2D mode the 6800U uses less power than a 9800XT, and in 3D mode only uses a few Watts more than a 5950.
Provided you're not running a cheap ass $5 POS PSU, 300 Watts will be ample on simple system configs.

I have a enermax 431 watt p/s. I'll most likey buy an antec true550 p/s. I guess the though of having to take out a perfectly good p/s and toss it in a corner doesn't make me happy. :bash:

So basically your posting NV50 in the Hardware rumor section so you can joke about how much power it'll need? And this is a hardware rumor how? Based on what info from another site or forum?

er. Didn't you read my post? Theres no need. I know someone at NV running his 6800U on a 400W psu, and he says theres no problems.
Power consumption is going up for CPUs too...too bad but that's a trend which will continue.

It was a joke. I figured with the p/s requirment of the Geforce 6800 is 480 watts. Who knows in another year, 1000 watts maybe needed.
Ya Nutty, I read your post. IF and when I get a GeForce
6800U. I'll use my 431 watts p/s if I don't have any problems good and if I do then I'll upgrade.

As long as your power supply has a strong (>20A) rating on the +12v line, you should have no problems at all running a 6800 plus whatever optical/hard drives and such you might have in your system.

Not only are we trying to push more and more information through our processors, but we're doing it at a faster rate. Of course you're going to need more power to do it. There isn't any other way to get it done.
I've seen Shuttle boxes with < 300W PSU's running 9800's and the like. This is just an overestimated number that they give out to make sure people consider a quality power supply when buying/building a system.

I just checked, it's 20a on the +12v line. I'm seeing if I can rearrange my wiring connectors right now.

My 420W is only 18A. It's plenty for what I have now, but my next upgrade will include a better quality unit. The next upgrade will be the works - Athlon 64, mobo, video card, etc.
y-splitters....also, even quality 300W PSUs work just finetranslated from 3dcenter.org....
With us the NV40-Board ran also immediately and decently anyhow with a 300-Watt-OEM-Netzteil. Whereby this is surely also rather a stroke of luck, which can hardly be generalized. But with decent 350-Watt-Netzteilen might a NV40-Board probably run quite surely, in systems with very achievement-corrosive CCU such as Athlon 64/FX or Prescott; -) it should be then already better a 400-Watt-Netzteil. And if all cords should tear, then 480-Watt-Netzteil recommended of nVidia must be ordered evenly nevertheless.

Since i might as well spin this thread in another unrelated direction
I bet that my second computer "gsgl" can run with the 6800 ultra no problem, it has my trusty Enermax 350W, though its noisey, its never failed, ive ran dual athlon mp's and 2 80gig WDSE and 1 IBM 40gig 1cdrom and 1 cdrw

I think NV50 will use IBM's 0.09 micron SOI, with this technology will mean to cut down power requirements. :)

But at the same time, it'll have more transistors running at a higher clock rate. Switching to a smaller process slows down the increase of power consumption, but the trend is still up up up!
I have a spare Enermax PSU.... I wonder if i can use that as my dedicated Video Power... Drrolage

Hexus also used a psu in the 300W range and that was OK to.
I think nvidia are being overly cautious. Also, all this talk of the card melting your case in something approaching the china syndrome seems to a bit of FUD also, IBM seem to be able to keep 220million transistors fairly cool, somewhat like the test 5700U chip, that was a lot cooler than the 5600 it replaced.
I am starting to like IBM chips ...

Indeed, IBM are gunning for their place in the IT market, since they really did drop the ball on the position they could have had by now. They're going back to innovating and thats good for everyone.

I thought thered be serious rumors about the nv50 but I see people talking about psu requirements. The mods may not like this, but who knows. does anyone have serious rumors about the nv50? is it a new core? 24 pipes? 32? 1GHz core clocks? 512mb of 512 bit ram? dx10?

I love my new enermax 550. My system seems faster. *Chuckles* Yeah I know I am imagining things, but this is one quiet stable PSU. I am glad I went ahead and got it.

Don't power supplies have to be signaled by the motherboard to cut on?
I know there is a way to force it to start by jumping some pins in the atx connector, i had to do it when i installed my watercooling, problem is i forgot which ones :(

I hear you guys on the PSU issue. It's pretty darn frustrating. I'm gonna have to see what other users say of the matter before I make my final decisionm, although my current gut instinct tells me to keep my current one and hope it'll be fine.
I sure do hope Ati has a better solution. It would definetly have a big influence on my purchase decision. If the R420 isn't considerably less powerful, but has some decent power reqs that alone might make tilt the preference.
The mods may not like this, but who knows.
Cut it out, your act is beyond tired now. The first post was PSU related. Depsite the fact that it was lame, PSU requirements are a valid concern/question amongst users.
