View Full Version : R420 Hints from people under NDA!
Here is a thread where some mods at the Rage3d forums (Kombatant and Gi Bro) hint at the performance of the r420
clicky:
http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33753558
i condensed the good stuff for you guys to read tho...verrrry interesting stuff
Heres what they said:
---------------------------------------
Gi Bro: Fair enough, but, im have a hunch that people would want to grab an ATi card when all flavours are ready. Also, i too think its silly to go out and buy something asap. Best to wait a little bit before one goes out and buys. ITs good to see all the reviews and such so that you can get a better understanding on whats going on. The last thing you wanna do is to grab something and then realize that its not as good as the other choice at hand
Kombatant: Listen to this man... he knows his stuff
Brick_Top: Yeah…common sense
Kombatant: Nope, it's not called that way. It's called knowing what ATI's upcoming babies can do. It's also called having signed an NDA so we can't reveal more.
tEd: No offense but isn't that called FUD?
Kombatant: Nope, because after seeing the NV40 there's absolutely no fear, uncertainty or doubt
tEd: Fair enough
T-Spoon: I hate when people go flaunting there NDA’s. It makes me even more anxious to find out what the r420 actually is…
Brick_Top: I thought people wasn't supposed to say that they are under an NDA. Or maybe that's just in some cases
Kombatant: Of course you can say you are under an NDA, you always can. What you can't say is what the NDA covers
Kombatant: A Non-Disclosure Agreement means that you are forbidden to disclose certain sensitive information. Not the fact that you have signed such a paper - you don't disclose any sensitive info by saying that you are forbidden to disclose sensitive info
----------------------------
isnt that interesting?

I'm sure they're gonna over clock the R420 till it gets close or beats 6800. But it still wont have Shader Model 3.0 support.

I'm definitely looking forward to X800 XT reviews rather than X800 Pro (which I'm not too excited about). That said, you posted in the wrong forum.

Only a couple more weeks, then the world will see...;)
its been widely discussed, and the screenshots shown comparing whats supposed to be ps2.0 to ps3.0 is actually a comparison of ps3.0 with either no ps at all or ps1.4...
http://www.pcper.com/news.php
scroll down to the pictures of pixel shader 3.0...
read the little blurb --- they made a retraction, the pictures arent accurate!

we already know that the X800 Pro will be s*** in comparion to the 6800U. it's just a question of the core refresh, where the X800XT comes in and thus the NV45.

I'd believe the Inquirer before I believed Rage3d...

SM 3.0 is important regardless of the pics on pcper, I'd rather have the hardware support than not - wouldnt you?

Haha, yea right...on paper the X800 PRO competes very well with the 6800 Ultra and should AT LEAST match its performance.
I'm looking for a TKO...;)
nvidia was trying to make ps3.0 look better than it should by comparing it to 1.x NOT 2.0!! :lame: :lame: :lame:
heres the retraction, from pc perspective
Update: We are looking into some questions posed to us about these screenshots in this thread of our forums; most notably: what setting are the "before" images using on FarCry.
Update2: While we still try to get ahold of this mod, below is the official statement from NVIDIA on these screenshots. The first screenshots are NOT using PS2.0, but PS1.x instead.

Update 3: only a moron would believe that ANY pixel shaders were used for the water in the above pic.

More hints from the same thread:
I just learned something that has me twice as excited as before. Launch day cannot come fast enough.
This is going to be great
haha.. that depends on what you think i am talking about...
But none the less.. I think Jen-Hsun may have a corinary and keel over dead in the next couple weeks.. This is going to be pretty funny stuff
A little birdie told me some things about the R420. I cannot tell you more but don't be afraid. You will be surprised about its performance.

I am not so sure about the x800pro, but I expect the x800XT to be faster than the 6800u. By how much? Not sure.
Still the 6800u will do everything I want in a video card, and is future proof to boot. Basically it's more than enough for me. My best video card was an Ati last time. This time the best one I own is going to be Nvidia.

Perhaps the X800 Pro is 16 pipes and not 12.....now that would be scary for Nvidia. If that's the case then I wouldn't be surprised to see Nvidia push out and NV38 type refresh w/ 450 - 475 mhz cores shortly thereafter. In the end......the consumers win!

There is the possibility the x800xt could be faster, but we dont know yet except those guys with NDA's however it could boil down to this: nv40 with ps3 but a bit less speed or forgo ps3 support in exchange for the faster x800xt. seeing the x800 pro at $399, id guess it to perform between the 6800 and 6800u
You have to admit this is getting ridiculous. It's like knowing there is a top secret spacecraft in the hanger, but you can't see it, no one will talk about it, and the only thing you know is it's black and real fast. (bur)

Interesting topic.
Hardly a fanboi, I know I'll own both in the end.
But I'm willing to bet Nvidia is playing poker atm. They've tossed some coin on the table, now it's Ati's call. And it seem those kids at Nvidia are already aware that Ati has an answer and plans on making their time on top short lived.
taken from hexus.net:
"Editors Note: Got to be said guys - currently this card is the fastest thing we have seen without doubt. We all know ATi is working on something, and we are all waiting to see what it brings, we would post some rumours but there seems to be a lot of conflicting stories out there. After long discussions with NVIDIA they have promised us that they have worked very hard to get the crown back, and they don't intend to have it for just one month. It looks like we have an exciting year ahead!"

And you expect them to say "Oh, well actually...."? Of course they're going to say they'll have the "crown" in X months. I'd expect the same from ATi.
As for the comments made - I wouldn't read too much into them, since they're more often than not completely exaggerating, as has been demonstrated before. Having said that, based on what I've heard I still expect X800XT to win both the performance and IQ titles... just not by the kind of heart attack-inducing distances that the ATi fanboys are talking about :)
Similarly, people around here would do well to cut back on their constant lauding of the 6800U. I know this is an NVIDIA fansite, but you've only seen one play of the game here, and you're going to look stupid if the other guy has a better hand. :ORDER:

So basically we are waiting to see who has the better hand. Good luck to both sides.

You're still going on about this and I have told you that after having to put up with sh*t for 12 months you expect people not to be excited about a new good product ?
I think most people here are glad they have a good nvidia product to look forward to.

Andy

Excited and glad? Sure. But those things aren't the same as people ranting and raving about how ATi couldn't possible match it, or that they'll buy one without even considering/looking at anything else.
That's called being stupid, not excited.

I agree Paul, commets from ATI fans site memebers that are under NDA are only expected to sound good. That why its better to take a lets see approach..much like the PS3.0 case.
