View Full Version : CPU speed needed for 6800 Ultra?

I'm looking to pick up a 6800 Ultra when it releases in a month or so. Problem is, my lightweight CPU is really going to hold me back. A P4 2.4GHz 400MHz FSB is very lame these days. When I upgrade, how fast of a CPU would be needed for a 6800 Ultra? I know I'll need a beefy power supply, but I don't have enough $$$ for a top-of-the-line system.

If you go pentium 4 the best buy right now (IMO) is the 3.0C.
maybe the 6800 non ultra is enough unless you get the latest CPUs and all
that...
I think you should hold off a bit, se how the non ultra performs and what kind
of a animal the R420 is.. maybe the vanila 6800 has unlockable pipelines, that
would be neat..
When all cards are on the table, go for what looks best..
its alot of money..

I was reading (don't remember where at the moment) that the 2.4 Prescott proc can reach 3.4 o/c..... I am not an Intel fan (more of an AMD junkie) but I think that is amazing nonetheless

sounds good, a bit odd tho with all the hubbub about its temperature and all
that, was that with some of that liquid nitrogen stuff perhaps?

okay i was off it was a 3.2 gig clock and with watercooling they was able to take it to 3.6 gig
thats a nice OC, very nice for stock cooling..
I guess I shouldnt be supprised since new cores are made to ramp
upwards hehe.. but there was some stirup about it getting hot wasnt there?
which doesnt really fit into this picture..

anandtech has an article that shows that the prescott really isn't as hot as everyone was making it out to be...

If I had a Prescott 2.4A, I could overclock it to 3GHz. I'm stuck with this 2.4GHz Northwood 400MHz FSB. I don't want another Intel piece of crap. The Athlon 64 3000+ sure looks good to me!!! :lol2:

Go for the P4EE or the Athlon FX-53 if you want the full experiance

10 extra frames for $700 or $900 "if you want the full experiance"? No way! If you do upgrade I say go for a AMD64 3200 or P4 3.0C.

overclockability is key nowadays.... that is why the mobile athlonxp chips are so popular.
Carbon unit man...
On what mainboard u oc ur p4c ??
I got intel...can i overcloack my p4 2.8 c?????
thanks a lot mannnn :)

get an a64 3000+ or 3200+ those perform nice, yet are under $300. they will beat any pentium4 and lessen the bottleneck on a 6800u

I'll go with:
PENTIUM 5 SUPER HYPER TURBO ED.
P4 3.06/3.0c are good price/performance right now.

agreed... since the GF6 is so powerful that's CPU limited by nearly everything available, you best go for the Athlon64 to pair with it
I think u can read that MikeC found certain instances where his athlon3400+ was the bottleneck in certain games at certain res....
Playing at 1600x1200 2xaa usually the card is the bottleneck... After having to tone down the visuals on FarCry, Splinter Cell, and Hitman2, convinced me to get a new card :D Funny thing about Hitman2 and splinter cell, is they look identical to thier originals, but run way slower :retard:

DFI Lanparty Pro 875 rev A
you'll want a CPU that's as fast as u can afford or some good cooling on ur existing (assuming you got a good one) so you can push it to the highest possible overclock.

I o/ced my P4 Northwood to 3.37, on air, reaching 49C at full load during the hot summer.
Or the old 2500+ cores... There is a reason why these where locked after a while. Those sold like butter really.
But really I wouldn´t jump the gun. If you are dedicated to get a X800XT or 6800 ULTRA why not get it and then decide if you really need a faster CPU. What does it matter if you are CPU bottlenecked if your computer are so fast anyway it don´t matter. And then you can upgrade when CPU:s are more decently priced.
And why not do some overclocking in the meanwhile ;)
