Your really in the loop.
A) The Xbox2 developer kit is based on a Mac with an IBM PowerPC processor and ATI graphics card.
B) ATI is designing the Graphics Chip. Read the press release.
C) Microsoft has contracted TSMC to fab the chip -- through ATI. The announcement has already been made.
D) Microsoft makes money by selling games not machines, so why would they make it backwards compatible. :retard:
ATI is designing part of the chip. They will not be delivering actual silicon to Microsoft.

the graphics side of Xbox 2 will be based on either ATI R500 or ATI R600, or something in-between. it will use on-chip memory aka eDRAM.
And actually, Microsoft is co-designing Xbox 2 VPU with ATI. MS has licenced IP from ATI, and MS is said to be directly involved in its own graphics processor, with ATI. unlike how Nvidia completely designed the Xbox GPU.
ArtX made the Gamecube GPU during 1998~2000, before ATI bought them.
As for the Xbox 2 CPU(s), they are being designed by IBM. the CPU configuration for Xbox 2 is said to be 3 PowerPC 976s. each can process 2 threads. not quite duel core CPUs (like Power4, Power5) but able to act like duel core CPUs.
as far as I know AMD is not designing Xbox 2 CPU(s). they will be IBM-designed, IBM-fabbed.
The Nintendo graphics processor for GCNext that ATI is designing will be different from the Xbox 2 graphics processor. different goals, different timetables. however, both will be capable of at least DX9-level shaders. Nintendo will probably be using some form of Open GL 2.0, while Xbox 2 will either be Shader Model 3.0 (R500) or Shader Model 4.0 (DX10, R600).
Microsoft makes money by selling games not machines, so why would they make it backwards compatible
umm isnt that the very reason why they would make it backward compatible..... they can keep selling xbox 1 title and making money off those also at the same time as making money off new xbox 2 titles ..... am i the only one not very excited about xbox2 as compared to xbox 1 when it was first anounced....
No since then they have to sell it on a rebate. They much rather charge full price for the same product all over again just with some new spanky graphics ;)

The article on the front page says it will be based on the R600 VPU. Not to mention an AMD based CPU. Personally, I love my XBOX and will most definetely be getting an XBOX 2.
